Vengeance Road – Music Motivation

description

I’ve always loved music and it’s inspired me in so many ways throughout my life. I’ve often heard songs that cause me to think about a character or scene in one of my books. Sometimes I’ll hear music that inspires a scene I’m writing at that moment.

Music and emotion go hand in hand, in my opinion. And music can enhance a scene in a movie to the point that a soundtrack becomes popular or a particular song in a movie becomes iconic, like Celine Dion’s song My Heart Will Go on from the movie Titanic, or Shallow from the 2018 version of A Star is Born. I love the entire soundtrack for The Greatest Showman. Music can be the heart of a scene or it might be the accent that facilitates an emotion within a scene.

There are several songs that I thought about or listened to while writing Vengeance Road. From that playlist in my head, I chose five songs I wanted to share with you.
These song may not have the same meaning or impact for someone else that they have for me. And that’s okay. Music can be very personal for a lot of reasons. I do hope you’ll enjoy checking out the music.

Some of the songs are explicit. If you read the Torpedo Ink series then this isn’t going to shock you. But, if you’ve not tried the series or not ready any motorcycle club books know that the language can be rough. It’s a rough world and I try to make my characters and club as real as I can.

I’ve linked to YouTube videos of the songs. Some of them have the lyrics, some do not. But, this was the easiest way I could think of the share the music.

Come Back Home by Callum Scott - COME BACK HOME

description

Steele sacrificed what he wanted most, Breezy, the woman he fell in love with. Letting her go was for her own safety, but to force her to leave he had to be cruel. In his mind he always meant to find her again and bring her back home to him.

From the lyrics-

I'm burning like a fire, will someone help my pain?
I'm drowning above the water, oh, help me breathe again
And I, I can't let you go, so when you're ready, come back home

The Scientist - Coldplay -

The Scientists - with lyrics

description

There’s power in regret even when we know that what we did was the right thing. Steele and Breezy’s love story is full of regret and longing. Breezy was an unexpected gift that Steele wanted to keep for himself. But, when he knew the danger level was about to explode he was determined to keep her safe at any cost. Even though sending her away was one of the hardest things he had ever done.

From the lyrics-

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start

Riot – Camino -
RIOTdescription

Torpedo Ink is more than just a motorcycle club. More than just highly trained assassins. They’re a family forged from survival and horror. Attacking one means taking on the entire club. These aren’t people you mess with and walk away from. They aren’t going to fight fair. They aren’t going to forgive. They are a riot of violence and they defend their home.

From the lyrics. -

I'll start a riot in the middle of the night
I will defend my
Home
And start a riot in the middle of the night

Wrong side of Heaven – Five Finger Death Punch -
WRONG SIDE OF HEAVEN

description

Redemption is a big part of the Torpedo Ink series. From being abused as children, to being trained as assassins to escaping to the United States in order to stop a human trafficking ring and eventually create their own way of life and find a home. But, surviving such a horrific beginning isn’t something that leaves you just because you escaped it. The members of Torpedo Ink know they’re dangerous. They know the chances of having a normal life just aren’t there for them. But, they also know they won’t tolerate seeing that kind of abuse anywhere else. They’ve found focus and reason and they will use their considerable skills to save others.
Life tattooed hell onto their souls and they’ve taken turned it into a tool to stop evil. They now walk a fine line toward redemption.

From the lyrics-

Arms wide open
I stand alone
I'm no hero and I'm not made of stone
Right or wrong
I can hardly tell
I'm on the wrong side of heaven and the righteous side of hell

Bad Company – Five Finger Death Punch -

BAD COMPANY

description

This song was originally done by the band Bad Company but I chose the Five Finger Death Punch version because it’s edgier.

Thought Torpedo Ink now has found a home in Caspar and are trying to make lives for themselves it doesn’t mean they’re apologetic for who they are. They were formed into dangerous assassins and have taken those skills and re-shaped their lives and their purpose. Knowing you’re dangerous and that you’ve done horrible things in order to survive doesn’t mean you have to apologize for who you are. And you can be proud of the bad company that you keep.

From the lyrics-

Bad company
I can't deny
Bad, bad company
Till the day I die
Until the day I die

Nobody Praying for Me – Seether -
NOBODY PRAYING FOR ME

description

There are levels of loneliness in the world that I’m sure we’ve all experienced to some degree in some way or another. Each member of Torpedo Ink must struggle with their own inner demons and their own brand of loneliness. There’s also a type of loneliness that lives within a group. Sadly, the world is capable of turning its back on entire groups of people. Torpedo Ink, as a club, suffers from its own brand of loneliness. It’s the knowledge that they’ll never truly fit into society. Knowing they will be judged by outsiders who know nothing about their life struggle. It’s the knowledge that acceptance and love may only happen within their own small circle.

But, for some, this kind of loneliness galvanizes them into a unit so strong that nothing can rip it apart. It’s like saying, “Even if no one else accepts and loves you, I will, because I know your story. Because I am part of you. And everything I am will protect you and care for you. So, fuck them.” That kind of strength can help fill the void. And it can make you very, very dangerous.

From the lyrics-

I'm a whisper lost upon wind
I'm the ember that'll burn you down
I'm the water that'll drown you
I'm a star that's just a black hole now
I'm a terrifying danger

Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit -
BEHIND BLUE EYES (with lyrics)

description

For me this is Steele. His amazing blue eyes see beyond and behind what’s right in front of him. He knows himself. He knows what he wants.

From the lyrics-

But my dreams they aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

Carol L Cridge OMG... love them all, and 3 are ones on my playlist I listen to, All the Time. Heard one last night that made me cry, "Angela" by the Lumineers, It's the song! I chose it for a character I know and love, "Angel." Coldplay, wow, I was listening to 'The Scientist 'this morning while writing! If you get time, listen to "Angela." Super sad but great song- about moving on and finding what's missing in your life. Pretty sure you'll like it. Can't wait to get the New Torpedo Ink <

message 7: by Janice (new)

Janice Never heard any of them.

message 8: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge Got to throw these in---songs I picture Maestro and the band playing... Seriously! Muse "Pressure" - Twenty one Pilots, "Heathens" and "My Blood" - Rise Against "The Violence"- Foster the People, "Sit Next to Me" and my favorite,..For Savage and Reaper, The Revivalists, "All My Friends" Love it.

message 9: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge My song for Czar--since "Bound Together" has been Linkin Park "What I've Done" . To me, it's just perfect for him but could do for any of the guys. ~ "I start again and whatever pain may come Today this ends, I'm forgiving what I've done." such great lyrics!

message 10: by Sara (new)

Sara Frasier Holy wow! For some reason I didn't picture you listening to Five Finger Death Punch. The country song yes and maybe some softer rock but not FFDP. I absolutely love FFDP. That just makes me appreciate you even more. In Judgement Road the way you described Ink it made me think of Chris Kael, the bass player of FFDP.

message 11: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge When I think of the girls, Lana or Alena--one piece of music comes to mind, I thought of them as soon as I heard it...it's hypnotic and lovely. At the same time makes you want to run into the dark...away from something. "Night" by an Italian composer, Ludovico Einaudi. I don't know how to do links, sorry. I get so excited about Music and Books and well, I love to share those things with anyone! Sorry I am all over this, and leaving so many comments.

message 12: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge This song is for Breezy, it seems perfect in my mind. Of Monsters and Men, is the band and the song is "Wolves without teeth"

message 13: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge Absinthe, his song is "Spirits" by the Stumbellas. The one Torpedo Ink member I think of when I hear "Thousand Eyes" by Of Monsters and Men, is Luca Litvin (Code) Damn, I just love this cause I already had all these in my head...thanks for letting me share.

message 14: by Patrica (new)

Patrica Liebe Some of this music I have not heard of but I love hearing new music so Thank you I will be listening to it as soon as possible.

message 15: by Maureen (last edited Jan 29, 2019 09:05AM) (new)

Maureen Gianinio You know when you're reading a book and writing reviews almost every song you hear brings the story to mind.. seems to fit...like today driving my daughter to school i heard 'Just Give Me A Reason' by Pink, 'Im a Believer' by Smashing Pumpkins, and 'Behind Blue Eyes' by The Who and i thought of Torpedo Ink. Love the Greatest Showman soundtrack. Also Dear Evan Hansen. Especially No Requiem Tonight, You Will Be Found, Words Fail, and Only Us. And Hamilton's Raise a Glass to Freedom.

message 16: by Christine (new)

Christine I'm learning about all sorts of new songs! Thank you!

message 17: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge Listened to Seether again, Love that song, "Nobody praying for me" I have to tell you My Savage song, it's always been, "Whatever it Takes." by Imagine Dragons. Anyone agree? "I'm just a product of the system of catastrophe, A masterpiece-yet when I'm deceased, at least I go down to the grave and die happily" the whole song is great... and I think- So Savage!

message 18: by Court (new)

Court This song reminds me of the dynamic within the couples in so many of your books :) I initially thought of my other half when I heard this song but it's so relatable to your writing! The Drake series and SOTH probably have the closest parallels to this song but the Torpedo Ink absolutely connects too. I actually had no idea this was originally Bowie until I googled for the lyrics. Here's my favorite version: https://soundcloud.com/comawolf/absol...?

"I've nothing much to offer
There's nothing much to take
I'm an absolute beginner
But I'm absolutely sane
As long as we're together
The rest can go to hell
I absolutely love you
But we're absolute beginners
With eyes completely open
But nervous all the same
If our love song
Could fly over mountains
Could laugh at the ocean
Just like the films
There's no reason
To feel all the hard times
To lay down the hard lines
It's absolutely true
Nothing much could happen
Nothing we can't shake
Oh, we're absolute beginners
With nothing much at stake
As long as you're still smiling
There's nothing more I need
I absolutely love you
But we're absolute beginners
But if my love is your love
We're certain to succeed
If our love song
Could fly over mountains
Sail over heartaches
Just like the films
If there's reason
To feel all the hard times
To lay down the hard lines
It's absolutely true"

message 20: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge Bob Moses "Back Down"
"Caught in the tide of our own divide, Our moment to make a stand, We're all in the fight for our future bright, It's burning inside our hands, Fell on a line on our own this time and failed the forgotten man, Your reality is our insanity,
Our humanity is tearing at the seams. Aaaah-ah, never going back, never going back now...never gonna back, never gonna back down. Your reality is our insanity, our humanity is calling to be free." Some of the Lyrics anyway... yeah, so them. All the demons they hide can be overcome hopefully and in future books maybe for each will be a HEA? Can't wait to find out...tic toc my "Vengeance Road" should be here any day!

message 21: by Tina (new)

Tina Alicea Great picks Christine, you always amaze me!

message 22: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Schlem Great stuff Christine. The metal is so awesome. I love metal. Usually listen to 80's but FFDP is great, as are all the 90's and 2000's metal. There is NO problem with those choices either. WOW!

message 23: by Patrica (new)

Patrica Liebe More lovely new music for me to listen too Thank you everyone. A whole new playlist.

message 24: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge Me again< This song I've loved and I really thought long and hard about who it most reminded me of... I have to say "Reaper." This is definitely his-- another FFDP song, "When Seasons Change" His character, his soul is totally dedicated to Czar and well, everyone he cares about...He thinks everyone else has the light but him...
"There's a light in you, that tears me down to nothing, there's an angel in your eyes, There's a hope inside that you can make it better, you see right through my disguise.
"When it rains it pours
And everybody stumbles
I won't let them bring you down,
I won't let you down when the seasons change
I won't go down,
I'll fight through the pain, I'll be there right by your side, I'll never let them bring you down. When the seasons change.
There's a hope in me, that I'll die for something, Was the fire in my eyes, all this pain inside, Will it be this way forever...I can run but I can't hide
When it rains it pours, and everybody stumbles, I won't let them bring me down. I won't let you down."

🌟Star🌟 I love Wrong Side of Heaven! Perfect! I agree Carol Whatever It Takes suits Savage. I think a good Torpedo Ink song would be “Monster” by Imagine Dragons. Mostly the chorus fits them I think.

Yes, to anything "Imagine Dragons " love them.

message 27: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge "Feel Good Inc" by the Gorillaz/Feat De La Soul, << Maestro and Keys...can you hear them laughing in this song?... it's not a Ha ha funny, having a good time laugh, it's a dangerous, you are so screwed laugh if you messed with anyone in our world. Love it. Makes me think of them.
"you got a new horizon, it's ephemeral style, a melancholy town where we never smile"

message 28: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge Done with everything and now it's time to curl up and finish Vengeance Road...Feelin' a bit nostalgic, this series does that to me- Starting off with "Iris" from the Goo Goo Dolls, 1998. The song I associate with Ink the most..."Can't fight the tears that ain't coming, or the moment of truth in your lies, When everything feels like the movies, yeah, you bleed just to know your alive and I don't want the world to see me, cause I don't think they'd understand," What they see is all the ink, the artwork--what covers all the scars, every one of your MC guys do it, but I think Ink bleeds each time he tat's someone, he remembers... And The song "Drive" by Incubus from 1999, I see that as Player's song. When those are over "Your" playlist is going on! Love it. Have a happy, song-filled, book reading day!

message 29: by DK (new)

DK Altman Some more songs that fit: Far from Home -Five Finger Death Punch, Evil Angel-Breaking Benjamin, Iron-Within Temptation, Fire-Sleeping with Sirens, Broken Pieces-Apocalyptica ftg Lacey, Move-Thousand Foot Crush. That is just few but you get the idea.

🌟Star🌟 Yes! Love those choices DK!

message 31: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge Agree DK they are all great!

message 32: by Carla (new)

Carla Epiphany by Staind for all the MC guys
Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
Ride The Wind - Poison - All the guys
Animal I Have Become - Three Days Grace - specifically for Savage
So Far Away - Avenge Sevenfold
Nobody Can Save Me - Linkin Park - Maestro
Just a few off the top of my head that reminds me of Torpedo Ink

message 33: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge No one has mentioned 'Switchfoot' yet, I dont think so anyway--One of their songs could be for any one of them or all of them, the song is "Meant to Live"
"Dreaming about Providence and whether mice or men have second tries, Maybe we've been livin' with our eyes half open, maybe we're bent and broken, broken...."

message 34: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Gianinio Was watching Deadly Class in SyFy channel, all fitting songs, its a show about kids being trained to be assassins... but tonight, To Have and To Hold by Depeche Mode caught my attention.

message 35: by Carol L (new)

Carol L Cridge This song just broke my heart, it's so Torpedo Ink and all the guys...appropriate. "Clean Eyes" by SYML
"You can't change me, can you save me?"
"I don't know what this is, but this is a different beast."

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)
