Written Prayers
Written payers are one of the most transforming things I've ever implemented in my life. It takes writing in your personal journal to a new level. Several years ago, my younger brother suggested I did a written prayer. I didn't know what that was, so he elaborated, and later I tried it out. I'm so grateful I did, because it has changed my life. A written prayer is where you take a blank page, possibly in your personal journal, and you write a letter to God (or who or whatever your higher power is). That letter contains whatever thoughts, feelings, questions, and concerns I wish to express. And on the other side of the page, I write God's response. My rule is to write the first thing that comes to mind. And remarkably, something always comes. And even more astounding, is how profound the response is. Very direct. Very personal. Very inspiring. Now, I write often, and try to make it my profession to come up with great words and catchy phrases... but it always takes time and multiple revisions. But when I write God's response to me, it always comes out much cleaner and crisper than any of my first drafts. I know, through my own experimentation, that it's a greater power working through me, and not a power of my own making. One of the main benefits of this process, in comparing it to a vocal prayer, is that it's harder to forget or deny the revelation received. When I pray out loud or in my head, I often get thoughts or promptings of what I should do, but whenever I think that thing is too hard or incorrect, I simply brush it aside. However, with a written prayer, I can stare long and hard at what I wrote, and dislike it as much as I want, but it's real now. It's physical. Visible. Right there in front of me. Sure, I could erase it if I wanted, but I've decided to trust in the words I wrote that I believe to be God's response to me. As I've tested this over the years, I've always found that when I follow the advice and counsel given me, I always turn out better. I reach goals. I change habits. I learn new things. I improve. This method may not be preferable to everyone, but it has been fantastic for me. And my only wish is that I never forget to do it, every day.
