When I was writing CIRCUS+THE SKIN, I often thought about the difference between writing a book that was an homage to Joe R. Lansdale vs just blatantly ripping him off for several hundred pages. On Saturday night l got to share the reading stage with Joe at @shadesandshadowsreadings , but even more special was that @hannajean42 and I ran into him beforehand and shared a meal. Joe and I heckled each other from the audience during the show, and afterward he told me he liked what I’d read. Even if I’d started with his voice, he said, I’d made it my own. In his words, “we all steal from somebody.”
