July Newsletter

As many of you may know, I lost my wife last September after a long and very brave fight with cancer, so I haven’t been writing any Newsletters for about a year. But I didn’t want to let the summer pass without reaching out to my readers, many of whom have sent me condolences, for which I thank you.

The first thing I want to share is that I just completed a novel that I co-authored with my son Alex. The title is The Deserter, and it will be published October 22 by Simon & Schuster. So let’s kick off this news with a giveaway of a signed advance reading copy. Submit the name of your favorite DeMille book on my Newsletter page and you will be entered to win

The Deserter was inspired by the Bowe Bergdahl case. You may remember that Bergdahl deserted from the Army while stationed in Afghanistan, then was captured by the Taliban and held for a number of years until he was released in exchange for five Taliban commanders that the U.S. had imprisoned. The Deserter has a different storyline, but Bergdahl’s desertion and capture gave me the idea for this story.

The Deserter introduces two new characters—Chief Warrant Officer Scott Brodie and his partner Warrant Officer Maggie Taylor who are investigators for the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division—the CID. The deserter in the story is a Delta Force Captain named Kyle Mercer who has escaped his Taliban captors and is spotted a year later in Caracas, Venezuela by an old Army buddy. Our heroes, Brodie and Taylor, are tasked with going to Caracas to pick up the trail. Why did Captain Mercer, a decorated war hero, desert? And why is he in Venezuela? All this and more will be revealed in 500 fast-moving pages.

You can check out The Deserter on my website now, and if you push the correct button you can pre-order it now.

Meanwhile, I’ll post one or two chapters on my website before the October publication. Hope you enjoy it.

So why did I choose to co-author a book, The Deserter, with my son? And how did that work out? Well, we’re still speaking to each other and the publisher is thrilled with the finished product, so it worked out fine. In fact, we’re going to continue with Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor as a series, and Alex is setting their next adventure in Berlin.

To find out more about my new co-author, please visit his website www.alexdemille.com.

My 12-year-old son now wants to co-author a book with me about a superhero who plays computer games all day and saves the world from an alien invasion. I’ll think about that.

Meanwhile, my new work in progress is a John Corey book—the eighth in the series. The book, tentatively titled The Maze, returns John to the North Fork of Long Island where he first made his appearance in Plum Island. In a way, John has come full circle in The Maze which opens where Plum Island did—on the back porch of his uncle’s house overlooking Peconic Bay. And, as usual, John is about to get himself into trouble. Publication of The Maze will be—hopefully—fall of 2020.

I’ll keep in touch with at least one more Newsletter before The Deserter is published in October. Enjoy the summer and live life to the fullest.

Best wishes,
Nelson

message 2: by Mary (new)

Mary I am so sorry for your loss. It's devastating to watch your loved one lose a battle for her life. May you find comfort and hearts ease. I love all your books, but truthfully I did not like Plum Island. My favorite book of yours is By the Rivers of Babylon, followed closely by the General's Daughter. Best wishes.

message 3: by Janet (new)

Janet Blessings to you and your family for your loss. I've been following you since you wrote Night Fall. . .gave me the courage to finish my book. I stopped writing it 911 but picked it back up 2009 when I read your book. As a former member of MWA, I submitted 20 pages and they thought the premise was excellent. . .I do need to find an editor for it before I send it to a publisher. Your writing is so amazing. There are no MWA meetings in my area. I miss that. Again, Blessings and Thank you, Janet

message 4: by Linda (new)

Linda Please accept my condolences for your loss. I think your 12 year old has a great idea. Very creative. My favorite book is Up Country, but Night Fall comes in a close second. Thank you for bringing enjoyment to all your readers life. Blessings to your and your family.
Linda

message 5: by Evan (new)

Evan Valensky Sorry for your loss, I hope you are doing as well as you can.

My fav book if Plum Island, a classic. :)

message 6: by Judy (new)

Judy So sorry for your loss. Cancer is such a dreadful disease that affects the entire family.
My first DeMille book and the one that made you one of my favorite authors is Plum Island. I very much enjoy the John Corey books.
Stay well.
Judy

message 7: by Mary (new)

Mary Mr. DeMille, my apologies. It was Spencerville I didn't like. A woman trying to flee a sadistic husband is way to real and scary. I liked Plum Island. I also loved the Charm School.

message 8: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I live in the Netherlands and I'm not sure if I can participate but here it goes anyway. I really enjoyed The General's Daughter. Kept me up etc, etc.
After that I met John Corey. Maybe it was me, but not a lot of chemistry there. Looking forward to read The Deserter.

message 9: by Kaye (new)

Kaye So very sorry to hear about your loss! It is hard to pick a favorite when we rush to the store for every new book you write, but I have to admit that Charm School made a very lasting impression. Loved that book and recommend it to all we know. Really looking forward to reading The Deserter and would love to win a signed copy!

message 10: by Rob (new)

Rob Marriage My sincere condolences on your loss. "The Gold Coast" isn't just my favorite novel of yours. It's my favorite novel, period. In fact I think I'm due to read it again. It's been a couple years!

message 11: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Landry Sorry for your loss and difficult time.
Hopefully writing with your son helps the healing.
My favourite book was the Gold Coast, but have enjoyed them all with your clever wit and storytelling ability.
Look forward to many more new releases

message 12: by Oleg (new)

Oleg Moskalensky Condolences regarding your wife. It's part of life, but never easy.

I was talking to a guy named Corey the other day, a total stranger, but couldn't help recommending he reads The Panther, which is my favorite book. Perhaps it's because it was the first book of yours I've read, but it's still my favorite, although I've now read just about every book you wrote. I hope you and the family are doing better and very much looking forward to your upcoming books.

message 13: by Michael (new)

Michael Gist The first book I had read of yours was Plumb Island. From that point on you were my favorite author. John Corey is such a bad ass! Thanks for all of the Goodreads

message 14: by Samuel (new)

Samuel Deepest sympathies on your loss. My thoughts are with you in this difficult time.

As far as my favorite book, whew that's a tough choice. Plum Island (which I'm currently rereading), Night Fall, The Lion's Game, Up Country, The Cuban Affair, etc. Geez, my to-reread list just got longer...

message 15: by Meredith (new)

Meredith My favorite is Plum Island!

Wanda Maynard Sorry to hear of your loss. My favorite is Night Fall.

message 18: by Jeni (new)

Jeni Wilson I am deeply sorry for.the loss of your wife, you have gained an angel.

My favorite DeMille book is Wildfire, simply because it was the first I read of yours and it got me hooked on the Correy series, so hooked un fact that I bought my Dad the entire series to date for Christmas. He also loved the series and we are both awaiting in hopes for another Correy book. Deserter is on my to read list so I'd love a signed ARC of it.

Thank you

message 19: by Mluckett5 (new)

Mluckett5 My condolences for your loss. Please do take care of yourself. And thank you for sharing your craft - I still go back and re-read ( and listen to, as well!) all of the John Corey tales. For me, Plum Island broke the mold! Good fortune on the new release with Alex - sounds like a fun yarn.

message 20: by Doris (new)

Doris Kissack So sorry for your loss. Looking forward to what you and your son has in store for us all.

message 21: by Colette (new)

Colette So sorry for your loss- can't wait to read the collaboration you did with your son. My favorite is The Lions Game. It was one of the first novels I ever read with two narratives, and weirdly, my first introduction to John Corey (I found it on my mothers bookshelf and did not realize it was a series) and have been hooked on his character ever since.

message 22: by Tanya (new)

Tanya Rob wrote: "My sincere condolences on your loss. "The Gold Coast" isn't just my favorite novel of yours. It's my favorite novel, period. In fact I think I'm due to read it again. It's been a couple years!"

Tanya Dear Mr. DeMille, My condolences to you. I lost my husband suddenly three and a half years ago and feel for you and your young son.

How my husband and I loved reading your books! My first was the Charm School which we actually listened to as a book on cd - amazing! My favorite without question however was The Gold Coast. I read it commuting to work on the T in Boston and would roar out loud. Am anticipating your newest effort in October!

May time and warm memories ease your loss.

Ken Very sorry for you wife's passing, Mr. D. May she rest in peace.
My favorite is Gold Coast. Looking forward to your newest work!

message 28: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Gill I just discovered you this year. So far, I’ve read 11 of your novels, and I LOVE John Corey! I am thrilled to see that you are writing another in the series. I hope you continue to build this series (so, please don’t kill him ;-) ). It is difficult to choose one book because I read the whole JC series over the last month and see it as one giant story; however, if I have to choose, I would say The Lion’s Game is my favorite.

message 29: by Karen (new)

Karen I was introduced to your books by my friend who is totally blind and listens to your books. He loves your books. I enjoyed all of the John Corey series but I enjoyed the Lion’s Game.

message 34: by Terry (new)

Terry Very sorry to hear of your loss.
I also only discovered your fantastic books about a year ago and have now read them all. Eagerly looking forward to the new ones.

I most enjoyed Up Country and the Charm School, but Night Fall & The Lion and Gatehouse and Plum Island... oh stop, I pretty much gave all of them five stars.
Excited to hear of another John Corey novel, but would also like to see Paul Brenner back again too !

message 35: by Guekhar (new)

Guekhar Dear Mr DeMille, so sorry to hear of your loss. Your books provided me with many many hours of enjoyment, often deep into the night :) Thank you for sharing your craft.

The first book I picked up is "Night Fall" and I have since finished the entire John Corey series, including "Getaway" and "The Book Case". I can't wait for the next installment! My favourite book is "The Lion".

Take care.

message 37: by Ellie (new)

Ellie Connolly My favorite is "Charm School."

message 38: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Boggs It’s very hard to name a favorite book by you as I have read them all. I must say that John Correy is my favorite character. He’s oh so naughty and makes me laugh out loud with his humor. Hope you and family are doing well. I also lost my husband to cancer and I know how devastating it is. God bless you, my friend.

message 39: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I am so sorry for your loss and pray that God will grant you comfort and peace. My husband and I love your books and look forward to reading The Deserter. My personal favorites are The Lion's Game and Night Fall.

message 40: by Judith (new)

Judith Aselton Delaney I was very sorry to read about your loss. This is an insidious disease, A disease that too often visits our homes and shortens the lives of loved ones, young and old.

I just had the great pleasure of reading Gold Coast and immediately picked up Gate House. I am a voracious reader and in all honesty I have NEVER enjoyed books such as these. It was rare to finish a page without laughing out loud, even in doctor's offices, hospitals and even on toilets. This behavior did result in many speculative looks. Some sections, hilarity continued for many pages interspersed between the serious plot.

Again, my sympathy, and again, THANK YOU for many, many days of laughter.

Judy Delaney

message 41: by John (new)

John Moyer Very sorry about your wife. I keep a list of my top ten all time favorite books by any author and 3 of yours are on that list.
The 3 are - Spencerville, By the Rivers of Babylon and Up Country - but Up Country is at the top and as good as it gets.

message 42: by Phyllis Henson (new)

Phyllis Henson So sorry for the struggles your family has endured. My favorite is "The Lion's Game".

Phyllis Henson

message 43: by Stephen (last edited Feb 06, 2023 05:51AM) (new)

Stephen I can only add to my condolences for your family's loss.
The first I've read of your works was "Word of Honor".
Outstanding.!
Paul Brenner & John Corey are excellent characters (to say nothing of Corey's sarcastic sense of humor), and I could read Corey's asides for hours. In fact, I believe I may have....
Looking forward to more of your work, and if hopes are realized, your son's, as well.

message 44: by Loretta Mitro (new)

Loretta Mitro It seems like so long ago that I read "The Deserter". Is that your last book? I hope you are coming out with another one soon, and I can't wait. I have read all of your books, devouring them until there is not a page left (figuratively). Please, keep writing?

message 45: by Myke McCutcheon (new)

Myke McCutcheon I have read every single one of your books. I especially love all the John Corey novels. They are truly my favorites. But "The Charm School" is another that really stands out to me. I read that book in one sitting. It was fascinating to hear all those things about Russia. It made me feel like I was there. "The Talbot Odyssey is another good one. I read that one as soon as I finished The Charm School so it sort of continued the Russia theme. I am truly a huge fan of all your books so keep them coming.
