THE STORY OF THE MANUSCRIPT, PART 7: THE MUSICAL NUMBER
So, back in the months before States of Mercy failed, Calamity Cafe closed, and I completely lost my mind, I was writing and recording songs with a handful of friends. I was so attached to this manuscript and Mercy the protagonist that I wrote a song about her and her difficult quest for enlightenment. It had a different title back then, but the book wasn't out in the world so calling "Mercy's Theme" wouldn't have meant anything to anyone. It's not my favorite of the songs I recorded that year (I can hear the drugs flattening and deadening my voice), but the lyrics are a better plot synopsis than I can give you, and I still think the chord progressions are some of my strongest.
