We hear it all the time…everything in moderation. So why then is it so difficult to apply that simple idea to our real lives? I believe the answer is expectations. Our own, other peoples, and especially the expectations we perceive other people have for us. Well this year I’m saying phooey to all that. I don’t expect anyone else to run themselves ragged, so why should I do it to myself.
Normally at this time of year I’m in a tizzy with all of the demands that the holidays bring. After last year, I was determined to take a step back and pick and choose the things I would say “yes” to a bit more carefully. So far, my tactic of not agreeing to everything is working. I’m not baking a hundred different things, or shopping like a fiend, or attempting to squeeze three to four visits in one evening.
Other than our own family meal, we have agreed to go to one holiday gathering. We have made plans to take our children to do things that they will enjoy, and not things they are expected to do. The slower pace has allowed me to make it to the children’s school concerts, visit with a group of wonderful friends, and even continue working on my second novel. For the first time in a long time, I can say that I am enjoying the holidays.
Now if only we could get some snow!
