How does it make you feel when someone tells you, you are responsible for this or that?
Me? I feel vulnerable, fear of every kind presents itself, I feel like someone is out to get me, I am out to get myself, and, someone has passed the buck on to me. Luckily, my feelings and, yes, your feelings about responsibility hinge on how you and I weigh the responsibility, and, we can decide whether we want to be responsible or not.
I felt responsible for the successful outcome of an event I recently organized titled: Up close and personal with your local authors. The event was my nightmare for several weeks, until I realized the responsibility for a successful outcome equally rested with the participants in the event.
We tend to highlight our successes even if we know other people were jointly responsible for such successes, and, some of us stand aside when responsibilities clash. Own the responsibility you decided to take on, share the responsibility as necessary, and acknowledge the people who helped carry the burden of such responsibility.
Big THANK YOU to readers of my Newsletter and this Blog for sharing Up close and personal with your local authors to make it a success.
