Reviews by Readers
There is nothing like getting reader feedback to give an author a clearer sense of how their book is being received. Now you could argue that only people who have nice things to say will take the time to write. However, living in the world of "social" media (or is that anti-social media?) we know that plenty of people will take time to write unpleasant things, or just plain rant. Be that as it may, I am always pleased to receive direct feedback or see it posted on forums such as Goodreads.
Today I received this email from Bill Van Iterson in Ottawa. And over the four months since the publication of Burning Souls, I have been getting feedback from across the country, and even around the world. Today I am posting Bill's message, and a summary of some of the other comments.
Please send me your thoughts too.
"I found this to be an amazing book! It is like three books in one. The first book is a gentle tale about the interesting lives of three international students at Cambridge University. The second tells us about the varied and challenging careers of these three people, in three very different countries and cultures. And the third book carries us into a worldwide and violent catastrophe, which commences about the year 2020. This part is a real page-turner. Unbelievable! And yet, not so unbelievable. Throughout, in a manner that is inconspicuously integrated into the story, the author shares with us his immense store of knowledge about environmental issues. With its many very short chapters, the book is an easy read. This is a book not to be missed!"
Bill Van Iterson
Well paced and compelling… Chernushenko explores the redemptive power of acting with courage and integrity.
The Glebe Report, Ottawa
Character-driven action keeps the plot fast paced and suspenseful. Highly recommend!
M Slaven, Hamilton
A powerful, meticulously researched book. All of the characters are believable… and the interweaving of fact and fiction is extremely clever.
T Hewson, Ottawa
Far more than an eco-novel. It is truly great literature.
B. Hyer, Thunder Bay
Apathy is impossible after reading Burning Souls.
The Mainstreeter, Ottawa, Canada
Thought provoking, engaging, a little upsetting. I hope many many read it, ponder, then act.
J Varga-Toth, Ottawa
Essential reading for all who want to be prepared for the brave new world that awaits us… Will we burn with the same passion for justice, compassion and hope?
K Thompson, Nairobi, Kenya
Fast-paced, it offers keen insights into human behaviour in the face of rapidly advancing climate breakdown, increasing societal surveillance, and political indecision and discord.
L Dobson, Ottawa
So close to the truth it can be sad… However, I couldn’t put it down!
Nancy, Ottawa
It is rare to find a book that offers depth, insight, believable characters, and still gives you a good page-turner of a story. Highly recommend.
