Writing Updates – November 2019

Hi all, checking in for my usual quarterly update (mostly just to let you know I’m still alive and still writing!).

So it’s November (still wondering how the hell that happened), it’s getting chilly here in the UK, and since my last update I’ve had 3 lovely colds and another split eyebrow from training (it’s sat right above the first one I got in July, so I look like I have an equals sign on my eyebrow now).

Since my last update in July, I’ve written another 6 chapters of In His Darkened Halls, with the word count of the book’s first draft now being circa 200,000. The latest chapter I wrote was one I’ve had floating around my head since 2016, so it has been such a relief to finally get it down in the page and watch it play out.

I’m aware the above isn’t great progress word-count wise, and I’m pushing myself to do better. I have no access to a computer at present so all my writing is being done on my phone, which absolutely sucks for writing (hopefully this will change soon).

There’s one final arc of the book left to write, equating to about 2-3 chapters per viewpoint character each, maybe slightly more for one. This would equate to perhaps another 10-12 chapters, give or take, all of fairly quick and punchy length.

I am beyond excited to get started with this final, final section of the book – it’s grim, it’s bloody and probably beyond anything I’ve written before that people would say is ‘dark’.

Cover-wise, I’m still waiting on the initial draft from my artist, but what I’ve been sent so far is totally fricken awesome and I can’t wait to see the finished piece as it is exactly what I imagined the scene it’s based around to be like.

Anyhow, as is customary for my writing updates over the last 12 months, here’s my latest choice in writing music, The Doom of the Races of Éire by the immensity that is Mael Mórdha (you probably realise at this point I have a thing for everything Gaelic).

I’ll be back soon, hopefully with a (finally) completed first draft!
