OFF-“The man”

Hello everyone.

I’m so grateful for those of you who took the time to read and/or review my first book, “Off.” I’ve received a few questions about why I refer to the main character as “the man,” as opposed to the name given to him in the book. The main reason I did this is because when I initially envisioned the character, I saw him as someone who had lost his sense of identity. The theme throughout the book is masks; someone wearing a mask to cover up, hide, or become something else. “The man” gives the idea that he is indeed someone else underneath the name he chose.

Additionally, my reasoning behind referring to him as simply “the man” is because his character is not someone who grabs a lot of attention. At face value, he is ordinary and average—someone you can pass by without a second thought; there is nothing interesting about him at first or second glance. He’s like a blank canvas waiting to be filled in. He’s just a man. It is not until later that you realize that he is someone—something—else entirely.
