My Uncle Tim gave me some great advice when I got out of the Marine Corps:

“You don’t have to know what you’re going to do forever. You only have to know what you’re going to do next.”

I followed his advice, going from military to civilian pilot for a few years before staying home with the kids. That switch gave me the opportunity to discover something I might never have otherwise: I truly love writing.

After two non-fiction books about the human costs of war, though, I was in the mood for a change. So, I’ve applied his advice to my writing, and have switched over to writing fiction.

I’ve spent the last year and change working on Fates’ Revenge, a contemporary fantasy novel set in rural 1987 Huatulco Mexico. I’m still editing the manuscript, but have just completed a total redesign of my website to reflect this new direction. I’m not big on sword fights against trolls, or dogfights between dragons and airships, so my fantasy takes place mostly in the real world, and mostly adheres to the laws of physics–except where it doesn’t.

I’m shifting direction a bit with my blog as well. Instead of focusing on veteran issues, or commenting on current events from a veteran’s point of view, I’m expanding this blog to include sources of creative inspiration (surfing, spear-fishing, crazy stuff my kids do), and the ups and downs of my continuing journey as an author.
