Review of Lauren Kate's Fallen series
My cousin and good friend recently recommended the Fallen series by Lauren Kate to me. There are three books out: Fallen, Torment, and Passion, and the fourth and last installment Rapture will be available June 12, 2012.
The series follows Luce on an epic journey for her to find a way to stay with her true love, Daniel, forever. I'm afraid to give away too much because there are some major twists and turns along the way. Kate does an amazing job fleshing out her characters, and gives you just enough information to keep you on your toes guessing what will happen next.
I read all three books in three days because I couldn't wait to find out what happened next, and now I'm waiting impatiently for the conclusion in June! A couple things I will say is that I feel Kate gave too many details when they weren't needed (such as scenery, and even Luce's internal struggles could've been shortened)and that made for a pretty long book, and I found myself skimming parts and even skipping over others altogether to get to the more exciting parts. I like a book with a lot of dialogue, and there was more internal chatter than outer conversation. Also, the first two books were only from Luce's point of view and there was a curve ball in the third book when Kate threw in Daniel's point of view also... as a writer I kind of consider that cheating. :) I was also a little disappointed in the amount of romantic encounters between Luce and Daniel, and twice throughout the books Luce found herself kissing someone else, and I'm not at ALL into the whole love triangle thing. I think if she's SO in love with Daniel than she shouldn't have any desire to kiss anyone else.
Overall I really enjoyed this series, and I fully intend to get the fourth installment the day it comes out and read it as fast as I can. While I have a few complaints, Kate did a good job with her characters and I love the plot. I definitely recommend checking them out! They're worth it!
