What route did you take to getting where you are today?
My CV looks like Alan Whicker's passport - this can be laid squarely at the feet of time spent as a professional musician. When it eventually dawned on me the world was happy with one Paul McCartney, I left London and headed home to Scotland to pick up where I left off before music captured me. I became an education junkie and got all sorts of qualifications before moving into business management. During this time, I met my wife Christine - absolutely my best move ever. In 2006,we set off on a new adventure: we built a home in Crete where I discovered a new obsession. Writing. The rest as they say...
What, if anything, do you most like to know about other authors?
I spend hours on YouTube listening to author interviews. I'm fascinated by their motivations and journey to publication.
How many hours do you write a day?
I normally write for around 6-7 hours before editing/plotting.
Where do you write and how do you cope with distractions?
I can write anywhere. I don't need a special place, although I tend to spend summer in the studio and winter at the dining room table. And yes, I do tidy up after me. Distractions don't bother me - I can even block out Christine doing her dancercise 🤸♀️
What's your biggest waste-of-time?
My current idiot fascination - watching the political toing-and-froing across the pond.
My biggest work challenge has been getting published - there were several times it brought me to my knees. It took twelve years of rejections before I got picked up by Bloodhound Books. Still waiting with fingers crossed for the big break that will turn me into Ian Rankin - yes, I agree, it is sounding similar to my musical career.
Where in the world calls to you?
My favourite travel destination...the farther the better. Most adventurous trip was the Amazon. Places I've written about afterwards, New Orleans, Marrakesh and Pakistan
What book does it for you and why?
A Bend In The River by V S Naipal, because I learned so much about writing from it.
Which film drags you back time and again?
As Good As It Gets - so clever, so funny.
What food does it for you and why?
Indian, Thai and Vietnamese. Spices, got to have those spices. Favourite dish to cook is definitely dessert... the more intricate the better - I love a challenge 😎
Do you play or follow a sport?
Football is my weakness and my team is....God help me - Arsenal
Are you creative in other ways?
Other outlets are singing/songwriting (I often write songs for the current book I'm writing), the guitar and cooking.
Tell us something we won't have heard about you before.
Something you might not know about me is... Robert Plant And The Band Of Joy (next stop for him was Led Zeppelin) were once given the hook so that our band could be put back on stage.
