10 Things About Me

1. I love telling stories!
Growing up, stories were the way I was able to escape beyond just the books I would read. At a certain age, I got tired of it only being boys having all the adventures in books and started writing my own. I studied English in undergrad and telling stories encompasses every aspect of my life.

2. I am not from Chicago, though it's my home.
I moved to Chicago in 2017 in need of a fresh start in a new city. That city also happened to be the home of the person I was seeing at the time. Sometimes I will say its because I wanted to be with my now, wife, and sometimes I will say its because I wanted a change. The answer has little to do with my wife, and more to do with how much I miss home.

3. I have two chronic illnesses.
In 2018 and 2019, I was diagnosed with both endometriosis and fibromyalgia respectively. The endometriosis diagnosis came after a long uphill battle over my reproductive viability that took place over almost 2 decades. Sounds a bit like an Atwood story? I wish it were. To learn more about endometriosis and fibromyalgia please go to John Hopkins Medical Institute for Endometriosis & Center for Disease Control for Fibromyalgia.

4. I’m an equestrian.
I have been riding horses my entire life. Being around horses, riding, and being out at the barn is one of the few places I feel at peace. I am most comfortable on the back of a horse and having gone through an extended time without horses, I know they are something I can’t live without in my life. I ride English, specifically dressage and share board a 20-year-old Dutch Warmblood named Romeo.

5. I love helping people.
Maybe it’s my background in psychology, maybe I like being able to see people step into their whole selves. Either way, I love to help people achieve their goals. More than that, I like to push people to find their goals, reach them, and then find new ones. I pride myself on not doing so in a pushy or non-consensual way, but get to know people in a way that allows me to give them the nudge they need.

6. I’m very prideful
This might sound like a strange thing to admit, but my pride means a lot to me. It's hard for me to have my pride wounded or to let go of my pride to move forwards. It’s something that I attribute both to my Scottish heritage and being a Leo. The stubbornness is all the Irish and Cancer in me. I’m cuspy!

7. I LOVE to read.
Like telling stories and now writing, I love to read. Growing up it was a big escape for me, and now it's the thing that I turn to both when I’m really stressed, and when I’m struggling with my writing. There is something about escaping into someone else’s life for a moment that allows me to clear my head and come back to my problems, fresh.

8. I’m lowkey am a work-a-holic
I have a hard time sitting still. I feel the need to always be moving or doing something. This leads to me being a little bit of a workaholic. I love the feeling that comes with completing a task or helping someone

9. I’m an extroverted-introvert
I’m really good at making people believe that I am extroverted and that I love to socialize and get attention. The truth is that I am very shy and have taught myself how to fake it. It took many years and a lot of discomforts but I can promise you that I still have to convince myself to walk into a bar or restaurant by myself for at least 30 seconds.

10. I hate being late!
I am such a stickler about time! I hate being late. It gives me the worst anxiety and I absolutely hate it. I feel guilty because I feel like I’m wasting people’s time and I haven’t gotten to a place yet where I can see it as a very human thing. It’s a work in progress.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me through these ten facts about me. I’d love to get to know you all better as well so please let me know a fact about you!
