Weird out there?
Hello again!
And yes, many people have remarked how weird 2020 has been. Or has it? From the point of view of a long timeline, this is simply life on planet Earth as it’s been throughout history. As terrible and tragic as the COVID-19 pandemic has been, we should be thankful its mortality rate isn’t as bad as previous outbreaks.
Writing/Reading/Book Status/Publishing
I’ve had three projects in progress, which probably isn’t a good thing. But I finished the main writing task in one of those projects yesterday, and that’s undoubtedly a good thing!
The short story I finished yesterday was derived from The Protectors, which was the final story in Dark Science Fiction Short Stories. A friend was telling me how much he enjoyed The Protectors, but I told him I have some misgivings about it. He (being a performing artist of distinction) scolded me for second-guessing myself, and maybe he was right to do that at a certain level. But I told him The Protectors took some odd turns to get where it is. It’s like Sheriff Ed Tom Bell’s man-vs-steer story in the 2007 picture No Country For Old Men. When later asked if the story was real, he replied “Well... it's certainly true that it is a story.” In this case, I told my friend the well in The Protectors isn’t benign or beneficial at all, like it was depicted. It’s a weird and scary thing, and my sister’s been afraid of it her whole life. So my friend, who’s a fan of horror stories, instantly challenged me to deal with the well in a more realistic(?), terrifying way. The short story I finished yesterday was the result, but I’ve yet to hear what he thinks of it. Obviously, his opinion will count for a lot.
The other projects? Well, they continue.
General Activities
I’ve been spending more time doing routine tasks during our lengthy stay-at-home order; more than I would have expected. Cooking became more frequent, which is understandable, but more involved, which I don’t fully understand. Maybe I’ve taken on some more involved cooking projects to break up the monotony. If that’s so, then that move might have been counterproductive, with the result being just more time spent in the kitchen. Time for exercise has suffered, and that’s definitely not good!
As always, thanks for reading!
