Boy of the Week by Emily Camp follows 16-year-old Kacey. To say she is boy crazy would be an understatement. The title of the book is quite literal. She practically has a new boy each week. She is also failing a few classes, so she is forced to go into educational support and is paired with a tutor, Jack. Not only does he make her do schoolwork, but he also can’t help but make comments about her dating life, which she does not appreciate at all. But as time goes on, Jack seems to be the one boy who sticks around. Kacey and Jack become more than just tutor and tutee. They become friends. Now there may be some feelings on both sides, but is Kacey ready to admit her feelings and let him in?
I have to admit, Kacey is not the most likable main character. However, I ended up completely understanding why she is the way she is, and I gained so much respect and compassion for her. At first glance, this book can come across as surface level with not very much depth, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, the main storyline is how a girl and a boy meet and fall in love, but there are serious issues that are addressed, such as divorce, abandonment, abuse, and slut-shaming. It was the perfect combination of puppy love and teenagers going through very real problems. Ultimately, my heart went out to Kacey, and I became really attached to her. I finished the second half of the book in one night. I was hooked. I’m so impressed by Emily Camp’s ability to take a naive, almost irritating character and develop her into this mature young woman who you are whole-heartedly rooting for. Plus, Jack is swoon-worthy in his own nerdy, quiet way. The romance was very sweet, and I wanted more! Boy of the Week, with its light-hearted romance and authentic teenage struggles, is a book you won’t want to put down. I’m looking forward to reading more from this very talented author.”
