Kai closed his eyes. If they didn’t know it already, it would be wise to keep his identity hidden for the moment. And they surely didn’t. No one in their right mind would hold a blade against the sgàil bàis’ neck. Shadow of death. The morbid nickname hadn’t been chosen, but unfortunately bestowed by some stranger who believed he had earned it. It was the name they threatened children with when they didn’t want to do their chores.
“You would’ve had a better chance if you had attacked while I was getting through.” Kai kept his voice low and, hopefully, non-threatening. He didn’t want to have to kill someone tonight, not after having gone to so much trouble to find them.
A strong hand closed around his left shoulder, and he felt an equally strong body behind the hold. From his position, the man had to be just under Kai’s height.
