Radiation is a natural and fascinating part of our world. Scientists have observed thunderstorm associated terrestrial gamma ray flashes for decades, usually shooting upwards towards satellites. Recently, however, scientists in Japan detected radiation flashes toward the ground – along with a burst of neutrons. This information could help our understanding of what causes these flashes in thunderstorms, how lightning is formed, as well as understanding the electric fields within the storms themselves. This is another example of how complex and fascinating our world is – and how radiation is a surprisingly normal part of that world.
