Amazon categories are absolutely USELESS! I spent days on "publisher rocket" (a great service to help any new indie author get a leg up) looking for the most ideal categories that fit my book and yet, are not too competitive, so my book can potentially become a best seller...and here is what I found.
Harry Potter rules the top stops for "Young Adult HUMOROUS Books"...Now, I love HP as much as anyone else, Ron's sense of humor, Nevilles unfortunate mishaps...Its cute, but its not a true book designed for humor and make us laugh all the time...
Next I researched a very well known YA Fantasy series, Percy Jackson. A book i loved as a child...Any guesses which category I found this specific book under?? "Children's Spine-Chilling Horrors"...You heard that right! A book with hardly a scary moment during the entire series is somehow considered "spine-chilling" And when I searched up the category, "Young Adult>Mythical Monsters"...The Percy Jackson series is no where to be found, which makes no sense since the series is based of off greek mythology...
For those of you who have read this far...WOW! I'm impressed...And if you feel that categories are still relevent after the few examples i've shared. Here is the kicker.
1984, is a true classic! And for those of you who know the story, i don't think you'd categorise it as "urban legend" which is where you can find it on amazon...Worse still, under that very same category, alonside this classic novel, there's a odd little book called "the animal penis book"...
So I pose you this question: What is the purpose of categories if even some of the most popular books are found under the most random and mostly innaccurate categories? And for those books that were traditionally published, were they put into these random spots deliberately to get a quick "best seller" title without much competition?
You'll notice all of these books were traditionally pushing...Is this a secret method traditional publishing company use to make a quick buck?
But what do I know, I'm just someone who likes to complain ;)
