One of my favorite writers just died. Though I've of course read everything he ever wrote, it's the George Smiley books I thought were his best. I've reread Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy more than a dozen times. Maybe having been a spy and a Cold Warrior himself gave him the ability to covey that era and scene so vividly.
