293. chicken nostrils roar

I have some time before the chicken is finished. Let me type nonsense really fast!

So that book entry that I threatened to write ages ago? Yeah, never got around to it.

It was about Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.

And, meh. I did not finish reading it. However! I kept it, it's still on the library shelf, in case I feel like finishing it sometime.

Here's what I liked about it:
It's SCOTTISH.
I bleed white and blue, and I lick unicorns, so if it's Scottish, I want to read it.
Hmm. I can't think of anything else I really liked about it.

Here's what I didn't like about it, in a nutshell.
Most of the time, I couldn't help but overanalyze it, like it was somehow a big sardonic slap in the face to Marian Keyes. IDK why I thought this, just did. Perhaps I was feeling particularly vengeful at the time.
I don't like that Oliphant was never referred to as being on the autistic spectrum until fans of the book started to say so, and author, publisher, etc never bothered to say it wasn't written that way. At least, not anywhere I saw, but I didn't look too hard. I mean, if this were a genuine book report I would've done more research.
I don't like that the only way this antisocial, scarred person became normal was by having bikini waxes, visiting people, going to parties, and getting a boyfriend.

This isn't really anything different than what you'd read in a Goodreads review... and they wrote it much more succinctly.

I've had to do this only twice, but if I'm reading a title and I don't like it, and can't quite understand why I don't like it, I will go to Goodreads and read the negative reviews. It always helps me point out why I don't like a book, and even one time I was like "YESSS!" when reading a review of... Oh, yeah, ROAR, by Cora Carmack. Wow, took me ages to find that one. The book kept bugging me and I couldn't figure out why, until I read a review that pointed out that the men in that book are creepy. Then, I felt relieved, and that was the time that I hollered "YESSS!" Because, yes.

And then someone responded with this to that one-star review of ROAR:
Oh wow, this in an awesome review! I haven't read this book, but it seems to me like the author made the heroine strong and independent... well except when it comes to loves interests. I have seen this a lot and I kind of hate that? When the author makes the girl a warrior and a total representation of strong women... but when it comes to guys she's putty in their hands and allll the awesome traits the author mentioned of her are GONE.
Srly this needs to stop! What you say and what I am saying is a bad example for EVERYONE, and people could get influenced by this or think that THIS is the way women have to be around men: like an object, helpless to do anything regarding themselves.

*Concur.*

One star reviews help me out when I'm too silly or bothered or busy throwing the book in acid to figure out why it bothers me so much. Oliphant was like that, too.

Have to check the chicken.

Am getting things in order. Am going to try harder this week.

My stepdad is in the hospital. It's the first time he's been "admitted" for sickness in the two-plus years he's had cancer, so I guess that's good. He might get out tomorrow or the day after. Mom had to drive him in late this morning, and she stayed here for a few hours while he got fluids. It was nice for her to have somewhere to hang out rather than driving the 30 minutes home. Thankfully, he's been admitted to the smaller, quieter, closer-to-their-house hospital.

I've been restless today. The house was cleaned very thoroughly this morning, anticipating the agent coming over to look at it to tell us what the price of it might be (it's a weird inheritance thing), but she wasn't feeling well... but the house is still clean. It looks nice! I almost wouldn't be ashamed to have people over.

And here it is, 17:17 hours, and it still looks like a fine afternoon! I'm rather aching to watch Groundhog Day, really... but I don't know if I have a copy of it or if it's available to stream anywhere right now. Hmm!

Time to check the chicken.
