Squids and Pigeons...

"I had hit a wall in the writing process and had to light out for Newfoundland in order to conduct on-site research, and walk the same morning walk that Harvey ritualistically walked (the one that led him on that fateful morning, to the giant squid), and get drunk with Harvey’s descendants, and immerse myself in what the filmmaker Werner Herzog sometimes controversially refers to as 'the voodoo of place.'”

In 2014—in what seems like another dimension— I wrote a book called PREPARING THE GHOST, which is about the first-ever photograph taken of the giant squid, an image that went on to impact the ways in which we engage art, science, religion, literature, mythology… Now, in 2021—in celebration of FLIGHT OF THE DIAMOND SMUGGLERS (aka, the #pigeon book: published yesterday, Feb 23rd!)— I revisited the squid book, and, in a bemusing exercise, wrote a bunch of annotations for Goodreads discussing the backstory and inspiration behind many sections. It was good, clean, tentacular fun. I’m hoping you may want to check it out here: https://www.goodreads.com/notes/22799...

And then check out FLIGHT OF THE DIAMOND SMUGGLERS (which just launched this week)! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
