There's Magic Between Us: A Playlist

Yesterday, I released my new novel, There’s Magic Between Us! Thank you to everyone who has bought it or plans on buying it in the near future — I hope you come to love this story as much as I do!

For those of you who have read or are planning on reading, I wanted to share something special: a “listen along” playlist, with one song for each chapter of the book! It’s a mix of instrumental and sung-through songs, with lots of sapphic goodness and summer forest vibes, just like the book! You can listen to it on Spotify here.

For some extra fun, I’m sharing the full table of contents, along with a brief description of why each song got chosen.

WARNING!!!!! The following song descriptions contain spoilers for There’s Magic Between Us. It’s safe to read through them chapter by chapter, but I’d advise not reading past where you are in the book!

Chapter One - The universe is testing me.
SONG: When a Tree Falls… by LeVirya, Sweven

I imagine this song as the theme of the book as a whole, so it made sense to have it be the very first song on the playlist! I associate it heavily with the forest, so I match this song with the moment Lydia sees the forest for the first time, and is enchanted in spite of her mom’s dislike.

Chapter Two - I mean, no need to roll out the welcome wagon or anything.
SONG: Seashore by The Regrettes

This song has Big Lydia Energy in general, but for this chapter I associate it with her growing annoyance with the townspeople, which culminates in her argument with Clyde. She is just so done and I think this song captures that emotion and her attitude perfectly.

Relevant lyrics: You're talkin' to me like I'm dumb // Well I've got news, I've got a lot to say

Chapter Three - Family full of trouble, huh? Might as well live up to the name.
SONG: Cliff’s Edge by Hayley Kiyoko

This is the chapter where Lydia meets Eden for the first time! Honestly, this song isn’t the best fit for the scene. But it’s called “Cliff’s Edge,” which is where they meet, and it’s by Hayley Kiyoko, patron saint of sapphics. I’m not sure what more you want from me here.

Relevant lyrics: You lead me on, you got me on a // Cliff's edge, where I belong

Chapter Four - Curiouser and Curiouser. Translation: bullshit and what the hell?
SONG: Aisling by Næturkall

This song captures the energy of the piano scene perfectly — the soft, hesitant notes slowly gaining in confidence match how Eden plays, while the barely-there chorus and bells represent Lydia’s first glimpse at magic (although she doesn’t recognize it at the time)!

Chapter Five - Are we sure this isn’t an elaborate “haze the city girl” prank?
SONG: Dirty Paws by Of Monsters and Men

This is a song that I associate heavily with Florian, so it made sense to put it where he’s introduced to us by name. This is also the chapter where Lydia discovers magic is real, and this song has a sort of faerie tale vibe that I think fits that revelation!

Relevant lyrics: The dragonfly it ran away // But it came back with a story to say

Chapter Six - Am I gonna find a unicorn next? Actually, that’d be pretty sweet.
SONG: Romantique by Kazam

This song has a lot of summer morning vibes, with the birds chirping in the background. But I also really associate this song with Lydia’s relationship with her grandma, so I think it makes sense to put it here, where we really see them start to bond over breakfast.

Chapter Seven - Guess we’re not sticking to the rivers and the lakes that we’re used to.
SONG: Lighthouse by Leavv

This is where Lydia and Eden start really exploring together! I think this song captures the vibe of the waterfall scene for me. It’s a little harder to explain than some of the others, but I think the slower, dreamy tone matches the way the girls slowly open up to each other.

Chapter Eight - Nothing left to do but get a little nosy.
SONG: Haze by Tessa Violet

In this chapter, Lydia winds up snooping through her mom’s old things, so I wanted to find a song that captured Charlotte’s teen years. This one did it well: raw and a little intense, maybe just a bit more than Lydia bargained for when she started poking around.

Relevant lyrics: I get drunk on a boy who asks me if I'm up // Tells me he can't understand his luck to know me

Chapter Nine - I slept through most of history class, but I’m pretty sure this is new.
SONG: nagashi by Idealism

I really loved the vibe of the prop room under the amphitheater: earthy and comforting, with lots of hidden corners for Lydia and Eden to explore. I think this song has that same vibe! It suits the tone of the scene as Lydia and Eden swap stories and grow closer.

Chapter Ten - What can I say? Sometimes you catch feelings.
SONG: Brighter than the Sun by Colbie Caillat

This song perfectly captures the energy of a new crush. That’s why I paired it with this scene, where Lydia finally acknowledges that her feelings for Eden have moved past simple aesthetic attraction into, as she puts it, “stupid, mushy like.”

Relevant lyrics: The light's out, but I can see you glow // Got my head up in the rafters, got me happy ever after

Chapter Eleven - You’ve never felt farther away. And not just, you know, geographically.
SONG: a moment of silence by Idealism

For me, this song captures the setting of this chapter perfectly: sitting on a rooftop at night, looking up at the stars. I think it’s also got a sort of wistful, melancholy vibe, which matches how Lydia feels when she calls her mom.

Chapter Twelve - Hey, foot. Say hello to your old friend mouth.
SONG: Joan of Arc. by Barnes Blvd.

This chapter has one of my very favorite images: Lydia and Eden sitting on a tree root that stretches over the stream, chatting and being together. I wanted this song to capture the peaceful, comfortable vibe of that moment.

Chapter Thirteen - If there’s anyone I’d want to adventure with, it’s you.
SONG: Hey Now by The Regrettes

This chapter has Lydia and Eden growing closer, and having fun doing it! I associate this song especially with the part where they play two truths and a lie, learning new things about each other, but really I think it suits the entire chapter!

Relevant lyrics: I want to know your life story so tell me everything you do // Oh, hey now! You're so much fun

Chapter Fourteen - Good to know a lack of heterosexuality runs in the family.
SONG: Your Fonder Heart by Anais Mitchell

Listen: I am an Anais Mitchell fan first and a human second. But seriously, this is a song I associate heavily with Lydia’s grandma and her relationship with Florian, so I put it here, which is where we learn about it. It’s wistful and sweet and just really captures Dorothy’s whole vibe.

Relevant lyrics: Come out, come on, come outside // Don't you hide your handsome face from me

Chapter Fifteen - Cue the cheesy romantic soundtrack!
SONG: Flowers by In Love With A Ghost, Nori

I was actually listening to this song when I was hit with the image that would become this novel: it morphed slightly across drafts, but exists today as the treehouse scene. It’s still one of my favorite chapters, so of course I had to pair it with the song that started it all.

Chapter Sixteen - What’s the opposite of a calm before a storm? This.
SONG: Waterfall by Toby Fox

I’m really proud of the vibe of the cave in this chapter! It’s the forest at its most mysterious and otherworldly, and I think this song really captures that, complete with the “waterfall” bell theme matching the sound of dripping water.

Chapter Seventeen - Seriously, what is it? Are you trying to sell me essential oils?
SONG: Yellow Light by Of Monsters and Men

Lydia has a very weird encounter with a few townspeople in this chapter, but ultimately writes it off as nothing to worry about. This song and its more ominous vibes match her mood. Pay no attention to any foreshadowing. I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about.

Relevant lyrics: Ignore all those big warning signs // Somewhere deep in the dark

Chapter Eighteen - Maybe I want you to remember me a little.
SONG: Chroma Velocity by City Girl

This is a big chapter. After spending most of the book searching, Lydia and Eden find the next piece of the treasure. I wanted a song that conveyed that sense of triumph, and also captured the magical cave setting again. This one nails it on both counts.

Chapter Nineteen - IS THIS A DATE???
SONG: Night Go Slow by Catey Shaw

This song matches the starfly date so perfectly that you’d be forgiven for thinking it inspired the scene. Really, I only heard the song after writing it! For extra fun: picture the first verse as Eden’s POV, the second as Lydia’s. The bridge and choruses belong to both.

Relevant lyrics: With no distractions my only reaction to you is the joy I’ve found // And I don’t think I can let this moment go

Chapter Twenty - That’s it. I’m done. I’m exiting stage goddamn left.
SONG: Hush by Luna Meguise

Lydia’s hit a low point in this chapter. She’s leaving Fairbrooke, nursing more heartbreak than she cares to admit, and is overall miserable. This song absolutely captures how upset, hopeless, and sad she feels in the moment.

Chapter Twenty-One - I have just one question: what the hell?
SONG: You Were My Lantern by Plastic Patina

This is a song I associate very heavily with Eden, specifically her backstory. So I put it here, where Florian reveals everything, including the stuff Lydia’s been too afraid to ask. The song is very melancholy and lonely, but ends on a determined note.

Chapter Twenty-Two - Can we stop the ride? I want to get off.
SONG: Sky Full of Song by Florence + The Machine

This song is Charlotte’s theme, so it made sense to assign it to this chapter, where we finally get to hear her backstory in her own words. I think it also captures the vibe of the scene: Lydia is miserable and overwhelmed, and she just wants this whole weird situation to be done.

Relevant lyrics: I couldn't hide from the thunder in a sky full of song // Hold me down, I'm so tired now

Chapter Twenty-Three - What sort of Children of the Corn bullshit is this?
SONG: Eye of the Storm by Lorne Balfe

Well, here’s where shit gets real. For the fire scene, I wanted a song that was super dramatic, and this one fit the bill. Things escalate quickly, and Lydia suddenly finds herself and everyone she cares about in real, immediate danger.

Chapter Twenty-Four - I’ve been told to “go to hell” before. Never thought I actually would.
SONG: Just for Now by Imogen Heap

This song is another one I associate heavily with Eden, and I decided to put it here, where she lashes out at Lydia and really lets herself feel hopeless for the first time in the book. No one is happy, and the lyrics in Imogen Heap’s soft voice really mirror the quiet desperation here.

Relevant lyrics: I think something is burning // Now you've ruined the whole thing

Chapter Twenty-Five - No.
SONG: Something Disposable by Trent Razor, Atticus Ross

This song is all building dread and horror. I associate it with the scene where Lydia and Eden are hiding from the evil faeries. It really captures their feelings of hopelessness and fear as they wait to see if they’re going to be found out.

Chapter Twenty-Six - It’s not going to end like this.
SONG: Sick of Losing Soulmates by dodie

After fighting off and on for a few chapters, Lydia and Eden finally reconcile. Things aren’t perfect between them, but they’ve at least started mending the rift. I think the melancholy hope in this song really matches the vibe of this chapter.

Relevant lyrics: So how do we win? // I won’t take no for an answer

Chapter Twenty-Seven - Bring it the hell ON.
SONG: Rabbit Hole by Mindy Glenhill

I associate this song with Lydia and Eden challenging the faeries to a game. They’re frightened and the faerie they meet is condescending, but our girls are determined to win. I think, lyrically, this song works to capture the theme of this chapter.

Relevant lyrics: Little one, Little one you’re on the run // Like a flickering shadow in the sinking sun

Chapter Twenty-Eight - Screw you AND your creepy ass hedges, thank you very much.
SONG: My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark by Fall Out Boy

While listening to this song one day, I imagined Lydia and Eden running through a hedge maze, dodging obstacles to the beat. At the time this scene didn’t exist, and when I realized that what I did have wasn’t exciting enough, that image returned to me. Now, it’s the first challenge!

Relevant lyrics: Can't be sure when they've hit their mark // And besides in the mean-meantime, I'm just dreaming of tearing you apart

Chapter Twenty-Nine - What’s next? Extreme hide-and-seek?
SONG: Crystal Peak by Christopher Larkin

I associate this song with the second challenge: dark and mysterious, this one’s a lot quieter than the obstacle course, but no less dangerous. I think the creeping sound and slowly growing tension in this song makes it a perfect match.

Chapter Thirty - I hate everything about this.
SONG: Sunset in Your Arms by Plastic Patina

This chapter is an emotional roller-coaster, and so is this song! The quiet beginning matches the final challenge, but it’s ultimately triumphant and cheerful, just like Lydia and Eden are. This is a real moment of growth for both of them and I think this song reflects that.

Chapter Thirty-One - The future is bright. Your smile is brighter.
SONG: Fidelity by Regina Spektor

After their initial apologies in Chapter 26, this is the moment where Lydia and Eden finish mending their fences, and are finally able to rekindle their romance with no more secrets between them. This song is a perfect representation of how far these girls have come!

Relevant lyrics: Suppose we never fell in love // Suppose I never ever let you kiss me so sweet and so soft

Chapter Thirty-Two - You look like a dream.
SONG: Anchor by Mindy Glenhill

In this chapter, Lydia and Eden dance and talk about the future. I can’t imagine a better song to pair with that moment than this dreamy, cavity-inducing waltz. I think the lyrics really suit what Lydia and Eden might come to be for each other, with enough time and effort.

Relevant lyrics: When I'm lost I feel so very found // When you anchor me back down

Chapter Thirty-Three - Go ahead. Rip the blood from my veins.
SONG: Soul Sanctum by Christopher Larkin

This chapter is the big climactic showdown, and I needed a big climactic song to match. So I once again borrowed from the Hollow Knight soundtrack. (I’m not even a gamer, guys. These songs are just very good.) The slow buildup to the dramatic boss music is a perfect fit.

Chapter Thirty-Four - What comes next? I don’t care, as long as you’re in it.
SONG: Drxzzl_ by invention_

Post-dramatic fight, this song captures the feeling of returning to the forest. It’s got a quiet, final sort of vibe about it, and I think it does a good job of calming things down as various loose ends get tied up and resolved.

Chapter Thirty-Five - Time to keep some promises.
SONG: Heart on My Sleeve by Mary Lambert

This song is the main one I associate with Lydia and Eden’s relationship, so I put it here at the end as our time with them draws to a close. But while we say goodbye, it’s with the knowledge that this is just the beginning for them. They’re looking forward and planning their future.

Make it a happy one, you two.

Relevant lyrics: Let me be your night walk // Locked eyes in the midday sunspark
