Mary had always wanted to be a mom. When she was a little...

Mary had always wanted to be a mom. When she was a little girl people asked if she wanted to be a doctor, or an engineer, or an astronaut?

(Mary was a very bright little girl) And Mary would say "I WANT TO BE A MOM!"

Mary went to college and became a scientist. When she was 24 she met a nice man called Jack (he was a mathematician) and they decided that they wanted to get married and have babies.

One day Mary said to Jack: "Hey, Jack? When does 1 + 1 equal 3?"

And Jack said, "Never, silly!"
But Mary laughed and said, "When you are going to have a BABY!"

And so they did! Baby Stella was pretty and pink, with fuzzy blond hair and deep blue eyes.

But the doctors all frowned and shook their heads and looked worried. There was something wrong with Stella.

"We are sorry," they said, "But your baby will never be normal. She has Downs Syndrome."

"Normal?" Asked Jack, "What do you mean?"

And the doctors said, "We are afraid she will never be as bright as other children..."

"Bright?" Asked Mary, "Will she know that I love her and love me back?"

"Yes," said the doctor, "But..."

"Will she smile? Will she laugh and play? And splash in puddles and dance in the rain?"

"Yes," said the doctor, "But..."

"Then you are quite wrong, Doctor, " said Mary sharply.

"My Stella will be as loved and wanted as any other child. My special Stella will shine as bright as any other star!"

Love and caring and kindness bless the heart, and this is the fire that fuels the brightest stars. And the special stars shine even brighter, blazing with a different light.
