Jamie - this sounds a lot like Lady Whistledown's dilemma in the Bridgerton series! I say if you don't want anyone to possibly repeat or print your comments, talk about the weather!

But yes, I do think the only way to keep a secret is to tell no one. Then again, we all need friends to vent to when we are troubled. :-) Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Jamie, I think as long as the person who shared the information wouldn't read the book and say, "OMG, she wrote my life" it's all really the artist's call on what they write and what they use or don't use. There will be whispers of others' lives in books no matter if a writer has overheard it, was told the story, heard it on the radio, etc. Authors don't live in a vacuum, they hear, the listen, they experience, and they watch the news/media which may inspire a story. It's going to happen, and I hope the authors that I read have a niggle in their conscience if they are crossing a boundary between "told in confidence" versus "overheard a stranger on a crowded bus"...because they are two very different events to both the teller and the listener. I basically agree with your assessment, and yet I can see how someone might feel affronted if they feel "their" story was taken without being asked or told. :-)
If you heard it as part of a nothing said leaves here then don't use it. I guess it also depends on how unique the story. Sometimes we think something is unique, but then we find others have similar stories with slight variations.
