Tell Your Story!
One thing I know for sure is that everyone has a story. I was that fortunate kid who had mentors who encouraged me to write. The first and most important, of course, was my mom. Even when I was too little to read or write, she would take down the stories I dictated.
My mom also taught me touch typing at the age of six.
Later I had Mrs. Green, the Grade 3 teacher I wish every child could have. She told me, “If you want to be a writer, then you should write.” She treated my stories with the same respect she gave to authors like E.B. White
That’s the key, isn’t it? Be an encourager, not an enforcer. Let a young writer know you respect his ideas without judgment. That you love to hear her natural voice come through. That their stories matter.
When it comes to my granddaughter Clara, I practice what I preach!

I have been writing since fourth grade. My first story was about a pansy flower and how it looks like the face of a little old man. My Mother helped me as we planted pansies in her garden that spring so long ago. I, in my last thirty years, have found an outlet for my writings in the daily paper. First, it was club news reporting and then Letters to the Editor and now I have a monthly column "Book Notes", which is a critique of the latest book I am reading. This is to promote reading and to support libraries. I also write feature stories for Mature Living magazine. It is an exciting experience.

I also has Mrs. Ball an English Teacher, who encouraged reading, by submitting your review of each book you read in a grading quarter by then putting same on a 5x5 card behind your name.
I believe the number of books read & reviewed also played a part in your overall grade.
It wasn't hard to read many books a quarter, as I loved reading; just like my daddy.
