“It’s probably best if we all just take a breath. It was all moving kind of fast anyway,” I admit. “I’d rather pause than have you guys disappear on me again.”
“Please don’t pause. We didn’t mean to disappear. There’s just been a lot—” Ronan cuts off and looks frustrated, his hand rubbing his forehead. “I want you more than ever and am happy to give you the space you need, but don’t misunderstand it for me not wanting you. The past few days have been torture,” he whispers in my ear. “Any time I’m not with you, I’m missing you.”
There’s a soft knock on the door, and Bishop stands in the doorway. The longing on his face breaks my heart.
“Just checking on you guys. You okay?” he asks.
I nod and then, before I can talk myself out of it, I walk over to him and lean up, kissing his cheek.
“Thank you,” I whisper. “I think maybe we’re all going to be okay.” I lean back. “That includes you.”
The war on his face is so confusing, I don’t know what to register first. The shame, lust, fear—it all flashes across his face and I’m gutted at the weight he must be carrying.
