I can't think of any but the suggestmeabook subreddit on reddit.com is a good resource if you post the question there and you can do it anonymously. And it's a fun place to hangout.

Robert Goddard immediately came to mind, although he is English. I've read over 20 of his books and a number of them delve into a family's mysterious past. I'd point especially to In Pale Battalions, Painting the Darkness, Hand in Glove and Out of the Sun. Good luck -- always enjoy your books!
Books:The Girl in a Swing by Richard Adams
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Bleak House by Charles Dickens
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Janus Stone by Elly Griffiths
Gad's Hall by Norah Lofts
Emmeline by Judith Rossner
Films:
Chinatown (John Huston)
Descending Angel (with George C. Scott)
The Changeling (1980 film, also with George C. Scott)
The Empire Strikes Back ("I am your father!")
Hereditary (Toni Collette)
Short Stories:
Miss Gentilbelle by Charles Beaumont (made into an inferior film)
Mute by Richard Matheson (made into a very powerful Twilight Zone episode)
Day of Reckoning by Richard Matheson (very brief, but horrifying, nonsupernatural story told through letters, also titled Graveyard Shift)
