Bella Rayne lifts her drink to her lips, takes a sip, and I down the first third of my beer; then, she addresses the elephant standing between us. "How old are you, Jayden?"

"Old enough," I tease her.

"How old is old enough?" She cuts her blue eyes at me.

"Old enough to know age is just a number." I take another hit on my beer, then set it down.

She blows a puff of air out of her full lips, "That's what people say when they don't want to face the truth and are trying to hide from the reality that it's a bigger number for some of us than others of us."

I chuckle, then turn to face her, capturing her legs between mine like before. I reach up and move a stray strand of hair off her cheek, pushing the length over her shoulder to fall down her back. Then I place my finger under her chin, tilt her beautiful face to look squarely into mine, and stare into her unsure age-gap guilty eyes.

"I disagree. That's what people say when they don't let the limitations of an arbitrary number interfere with living the life they choose to live."

She blinks, absorbing my meaning.

"If I had listened to your interpretation, I wouldn't be a member of Bravo right now."

Her eyes search mine, and I stare her down.

"Why should age factor into any equation? If you let other people set your parameters, you limit yourself to what they tell you you can do."

I lean in closer and whisper. "Set yourself free, Bella Rayne. Your life is yours to live how you choose to. The heart wants what the heart wants."

I let her chin go and back away. "Unless you're using it as a lame-ass excuse to tell me to fuck off."

Her expression is exactly what I hoped for. She doesn't see me as a young man now. She sees me only as a man.

I cup her face with my hand and continue to convince her as I close the gap between us. Proving my point in a way, words can never win the argument for or against age making a difference over what the heart wants.

Right before I touch my lips to hers, her breath pauses in her chest. I give her a moment to experience the choice my heart made the moment I saw her walk into the bar. When Mick recognized her and talked to her like a regular, I knew she would be my next conquest, and from the chaos roaring through my body right now, quite possibly my last.

There was something different about her that stirred something different inside me.
