It’s Been a While

Back in august of 2020, I published the third part of The Life of Lord Bagrin: Worlds at War. In April of 2021, I published the fourth and final part of the Life of Lord Bagrin series with Lord Admiral Commander.

At the time, I had spent so much time writing, editing, rewriting, formatting and generally fiddling with the works, I just didn’t have the heart to sit down and blog about them.

While writing the third and fourth parts, I found myself more and more interested in telling the story of The Learning Engine, that ubiquitous and seemingly all powerful AI that completely dominates Earth’s computers in the twenty-first century. Big Sister – where had she come from? How did she come to be at all?

Of course I knew where this was going because I knew her from the start. The story of The Loop has been in my mind since before I began writing Vigil of the Watcher. It was always going to end (or begin) this way, and introducing Big Sister in the last two novels was really the introduction to what The Loop finally is. But knowing her story is also knowing about what happens after the end of the Jimmian/Korzon war. Because that’s what the The Loop is all about – twisting through time.

So rather than blog about the last two parts of The Life of Lord Bagrin, I couldn’t stop myself from sitting down to begin The Loop. At the same time, we were moving from Richmond, VA to Reston, VA, then to Herndon, VA and now to Florida. Does anyone think the world hasn’t changed dramatically since 2019? So much has happened it’s hard to remember exactly what life was like when I last posted here.

So now I’ve finished the draft of the first part of The Loop: Cursed. Sadly, there’s a long way between a draft and something worth putting up on Amazon. I do pay attention to the feedback on my work, and while most have been very kind, others have been, well, shall we say honest? Yes, mistakes do happen and are often overlooked by the author, no matter how many times I re-read my work.

To my eternal gratitude, the better half of my life offered to more professionally edit my work, and by edit, she means exactly that. She does not change a single word, but she marks things up, comments and generally points out when I’m being too repetitive and tedious. Grammar checking is to me the most important task she does, because nothing embarrasses me more than failing at simple grammar. After all, that’s why little children attended “grammar” school. It should be something we’re all capable of mastering at a much younger age than this!

But it is her professionalism I value so much. While she points out issues, and makes suggestions, she never changes a single character. I, on the other hand, would just start rewriting something rather than take the time to explain to the author why they sound like a moron. God bless my dearest cutie-pie for her honesty and patience!

So she has taken the time to edit all four of the published works and coming back to Part 3, this is the last of them to be reposted. So if you’ve suffered through my terrible grammar once, you can rest assured that future readers will not have to suffer the same fate.

I don’t know exactly how long it will take to really finish The Loop series. I mean, there will only be two parts to it, and that driven by Amazon pricing. It’s simply too expensive to publish a large paperback book through KDP, and after Vigil of the Watcher, I realized I needed to break the stories down into smaller chunks. No one wants to spend $30 on a paperback book!

So patience, my friends. I’ll get it out there as soon as I can. Until then, if you’ve already purchased the Kindle version of any of the Life of Lord Bagrin series, or if you’ve downloaded them as part of your Kindle unlimited subscription, please feel free to delete them from your device and re-download the updated versions from Amazon. I promise, you’ll find a lot fewer errors that than before.

If you’re interested is someone who blogs a lot more often and much better than I do, I suggest you have a look at her own site at: https://journeyofasadhouse.wordpress.com/
