Defining the Dark Fantasy sub genre, an academic approach.

Any individual who searches the internet for the definition of 'what defines dark fantasy' will get many hits the aim to do so. The main issue I have always had with this is that these definitions are not true definitions at all. There is a general vagueness when determining what literary elements need to be present for any literary work to claim the domain, dark fantasy.
I find this silly. Mainly due to the sharp rise in popularity over the past decades. This should be something that is sharply defined academically so that it can serve as a guide for readers and avid fans. I plan on doing a deeper dive into this. Using more specifics in an attempt to provide my own definition. Stay tuned.
