Very good, Thanks for this overview. Of course, some – like Dickens – did employ fiction to expose social injustice and affect policy in ways which few political campaigns could. But this assessment of Cronin’s impact really speaks to the need today for popular fiction to expose the political ineptitude, corruption and lies that undermine the NHS and damage public health – despite the courage of most NHS clinicians and managers.
