Kindness
In 2009 I released my first book, Wills, Trusts and Powers of Attorney, Oh My!
It was printed. I was the sole distributor.
My marketing plan was to take the book with me everywhere and show and tell everyone I met. I had a box of books in the car and a stack of them on my desk at the office.
While at a lecture at the Niles Public Library, I showed a copy to a librarian named Frank. He looked at it for a while and asked how the library could get a copy.
I explained that in exchange for $20, I would go out to the car and get him a fresh copy. He said the library would pay.
A week later I had a letter from him saying the library turnaround time was six weeks. He enclosed his check so I wouldn't have to wait.
I remember this kindness.

Hi Sheila:Writing groups are amazing. You and I met with Rick one time and I couldn't write fast enough with all the gems you two shared.

Thanks for asking. I'm writing and submitting stories for now. I am doing flash fiction, too. Turns out, the third installment of The Gift Counselor series is taking longer than expected to come together. I have also written a screenplay adapted from one of my plays. We soldier on! How about you, are you writing these days?
You've helped me recall when I was in my first Chicago writers group. After a year, the group stopped meeting. I did not own a laptop and was writing my novel in longhand. One of the writing group members volunteered to type my book on her computer because she wanted to know how my book ended. Without her kind offer, I might never have finished or published my first novel.
