Stress Management

Don't let stress ruin your writing or life.

Effective techniques for managing stress.

Are you feeling stressed?

Who am I kidding? In present-day situations, we are all stressed, in some way.
Stress attacks us from many angles: social media, emotional, financial, physical, mental,
and the list goes on. Not to mention, the pandemic that’s been raging over the past few years.

Stress isn’t all bad. In some cases, it can be beneficial, as the ideal level can push us
to take action and change our situation when that’s warranted. However, the fact is, the level is more often too high and we need effective stress management tools to get relief.

Meditation: Daily meditation is very helpful. Mindfulness Meditation refocuses awareness on your breathing and body and centers you in the present moment. It has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, which is the body’s hormone that manages your response to stress.

Exercise: What is an exercise for you? You don’t need a gym membership for this one, any exercise is beneficial. A leisurely walk outdoors has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and stress.

Breathwork: Breathing slowly and deeply helps to maintain the body’s equilibrium. Take a deep breath, hold it for approximately four seconds, then exhale for approximately four seconds. Breathe in such a way that you feel the abdomen rise with inhalation and deflates with exhalation. This activity calms the body by decreasing the sympathetic/fight or flight response.

Disconnect from social media: Sometimes what we see on social media can be stressful, depending on where we are mentally and emotionally. Also, it may be more beneficial to use the time to connect with others or practice one of the techniques mentioned above.

Reframe your thinking: Keep a daily gratitude journal. Instead of focusing on what is not going well for you, think of what’s going right. Each day journal about at least three things for which you are grateful.

Daily Affirmations: Don’t look at what is, think about your vision. What is the result you want to see? Picture the end result daily.
I AM _______.

The words you put in the space will help to shape your reality and your stress level.
