Made for a Purpose
Jeremiah 18:4 (NIV)
But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
Do you see that pretty little piece of pottery in the image above?
It’s one that I was given as a gift from a relative who happens to be a potter. This dish was once a piece of clay that was formed, painted, and fired by a potter into what the potter saw in their mind as they worked at their wheel. It had a purpose.
When my boys were little, this dish often stood on my kitchen window sill to display the little flowers (aka dandelions) they would bring me. I’m not sure if the potter’s purpose was to make a dandelion vase or not, but that is what this dish’s purpose became at my house.
Just like this decorative dish was formed with a purpose, so are we. We each have things that we were formed to do in this life – good works that God designed for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10 NIV
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Did you notice in the verse from Jeremiah that the clay was marred in the potter’s hand? Note how the potter didn’t just throw the lump of clay away. He worked with it and made it into something useful. Maybe the original design did not happen. Maybe, instead of a water jar, it became a chamber pot. Or, maybe, instead of a goblet fit for a king’s table, it became a dandelion vase.
The same is true for us. No matter how marred we are, our Potter can still form us into something useful to build His Kingdom. So, go seek out and fulfill your Kingdom purpose.
Even if all you’re doing is holding dandelions on the kitchen window sill in God’s palace.
