Inspiration

I have been considering what inspired me to start writing. Although many things inspire things in my books, they don’t inspire me to start writing. What actually inspired me to start writing were a couple of things.

The first thing was speech to text software was developed to the point where I can dictate to my computer and it writes it down. As a dyslexic every time I tried to start writing before that I didn’t get very far. No matter how I tried I rarely got past the first page and one time a friend wanted to read what I have wrote. He returned it heavily graded. I had several errors per sentence. With speech to text software I don’t run into all the spelling errors, although I am quite likely to have punctuation errors. I think I sometimes get spelling errors as well.

The second thing that inspires me to write was reading really bad books. One that comes to mind was in a collection from Amazon. You can get collections of e-books and really cheap prices sometimes from Amazon and this book was in one of them. It was written like the author thought the main character was a real hero, but his attitude seem to be it’s a monster so I can kill it and take its treasure. It didn’t matter whether the so-called monster was harming anyone or a threat. He simply slaughtered anything that he considered a monster. I considered the main character to be more monster than most of what he was killing. I only finished the book so I could get to the next book in the collection.

Another book that inspired me, started out as a fairly good book, but the author didn’t pay attention to her story. She was so desperate to put in a plot twist of killing her main character that she didn’t pay attention to what was actually going on. In spite of having supposedly three super intelligent characters planning the action, they went after something protected by a ridiculous level of security. The target was about to be transported so they didn’t need to go after it where there was overwhelming security. It would’ve been vulnerable in a number of other places and not had anywhere near the security. Even if the author wanted to kill the main character it could’ve been done without going where there was ridiculous security.

So when I wrote my book I wanted my character to be somewhat heroic. She is a mercenary, but I still wanted her not to list be a mindless killer. Since she is a mercenary, I made sure that the story was not based on her being employed. The curse she winds up being trapped by did not occur because she was a mercenary. I also wanted to make sure that her story made sense and I hope that it did. Because I was also annoyed that I kept picking up what looked like good books and they were only an introduction to the story, I wanted to make sure that her story was complete. I may have finished it by giving a hint of where the next story begins and the story may not be complete, but even if I don’t publish another book, Trapped in the Curse is a complete story.

Also it surprises me that people who visit my website, never seem to look past the opening page. There’s a page called Meadow and Lark where you can read the beginning of the book that I’ve written but haven’t published. Also in the blog you can read more of the book and also get notes on background information about the characters and other things. And if you’re curious about Trapped in a Curse, Amazon allows you to read the beginning of the book. A feature I really like, it often helps me decide if I want to read a book without purchasing the book.
