Lillian Hellman & Joel McCrea

The April 2012 Turner Classic Movies Newsletter announces Joel McCrea month. He was a wonderful actor. I got to know him better while working on my biography of Lillian Hellman. He appears in a film she wrote, "These Three," which you can see on TCM. On the TCM website you can watch the original movie trailer plus a crucial scene in the film. Hellman rewrote her controversial play, "The Children's Hour," for Hollywood abd did a very clever job. Look too for a wonderful brief performance from the always reliable Walter Brennan, the subject of a future biography by yours truly. While I'm at it, let me recommend Alice Kessler-Harris's new biography of Hellman. She does a superb job of putting one of my favorite subjects into a historical context. My review of the new Hellman biography will appear soon in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Carl Rollyson I'm interested in comments from readers of Hellman's work. I would also like to offer a free copy of my Hellman biography to anyone who responds to this comment and requests a copy.
