Who is Tyler Clementi?
Tyler was a college student attending Rutgers University in the fall of 2010. He was just starting his adult life and coming to terms with his sexuality as a gay man. He looked forward to living authentically and openly.
One evening, he asked his roommate for privacy while he had an intimate encounter with another young man. Unbeknownst to Tyler, his roommate secretly broadcasted the encounter on his webcam and invited other members of the student body to watch.
Tyler was cyberbullied and ridiculed. He begged the RA to be moved to a new room, to no avail. Tyler learned that his roommate had intentions of doing this again.
After the bullying intensified, Tyler left his dorm and jumped to his death from a bridge.
What is the Tyler Clementi Foundation?
The foundation was started by Tyler's family to help raise awareness of cyber-bullying, bullying, and attacks against LGBTQ+ youth and community.
Through the foundation's various initiatives, they work with schools, faith-based organizations, and within communities to educate on the harmful effects of cyber-bullying. Their mission is to preserve the memory of Tyler and help prevent devastating outcomes such as Tyler's.
