The Luddite Ring

I can't help but notice more & more references to the benefits of becoming a social media Luddite. The trend to openly embrace avoiding social media seems to be gaining steam in some quarters, even while more tech advances & opportunities dominate the lives of those in the mainstream.

It's only when I grapple with my own fledgling presence on social media in one way or another that I daydream of throwing my hat into the Luddite ring. My most recent episode came after I joined Threads & Bluesky & then actually posted on Instagram.

The two new-to-me platforms seem innocuous enough. Of course, that could be due to my lackluster level of engagement with social media endeavors in general. I just don't take any of them seriously enough, I suppose.

So that's why I decided to challenge myself by posting on Instagram. The response has been interesting, especially the oh so subtle phishing replies. I may be somewhat naive in the world of social media, but not enough so to send a complete stranger a link to my novel that is clearly named—& therefore searchable—on my post.

Maybe some or all of them are only innocent pitches for paid reviews & publicizing & such—something I've mentioned avoiding in previous posts; but the common threads of wording, phrasing, & tempo seem to indicate otherwise. Reminds me of why I lean toward more trustworthy connections like Goodreads.

Still, I now have more Instagram followers than before, which may come in handy when I launch my serialized novel next month. Yes, dear reader, I realize I'd previously predicted my venture into the world of Kindle Vella would be before the end of September, but life has unexpected ways of fluttering in the wind, right?

Anyway, Luddite tendencies aside, I'm determined to continue immersing myself in the social media waters while keeping my fingers from twitching too much if I haven't checked my various & sundry feeds in a few hours to see if there's a legitimate contact.

Sigh . . . if only I could've honestly written "if I haven't checked my various & sundry feeds in few days . . . or a few weeks . . . or a . . ."

Keep you posted.
