Making a movie of your book?

Beware of anything that comes to you over the internet. If it sounds like a good thing it is probably a scam. Say what you want about snail-mail, but a letter, or a certified letter, is in my opinion, 9 times out of 10 more legit than an email or text message. For one thing, if I was serious about something, I would write a letter, put it in an envelope, put a stamp on it and mail it. If I were running a scam I would acquire a mailing list and send out a zillion messages because everyone knows that will be saving trees and the electricity in computer usage is practically free, whereas all those stamps, envelopes, and paper cost money. Well, I am being a little sarcastic here because I am angry.

After receiving several offers from self-publishing companies to publish our books, somebody must have bought the same mailing list and sent us an email stating that they wanted to make our book into a movie. After doing some research we found out the 'director' mentioned in the email is a real person, but that is about as far as the truth in the matter goes. The rest of the email is a scam. Others received the same message, word for word, thanks to the advantage of email mailing lists. It was said that when talking on the phone the person on the other end has a heavy foreign accent. Now I don't care if you are from Arkansas or Zimbabwe, if I can't understand you than you are in the wrong line of work! And all you have to do in order to see your literary work on the silver screen is to start sending them money for one expense after another. So my advice, DELETE THAT EMAIL!

Sometime back I received an email (same mailing list?) from this lawyer in some African country saying that my relative was working for an oil company over there and passed away leaving me a small fortune. All I had to do was send some money to get the ball rolling so I could collect my wealth. It seems this lawyer is a real person but it was another scam. What makes me angry about this business is that when you report it they act like they can't do anything about it or it is out of their jurisdiction. Oh come on! If it was Hillary's money they took that person would be tracked down by the NSA and she would send her people after them. But I am neither rich nor (in)famous.

I will post the original email I received below. Be safe!

Dear Joe,

I would like to express my interest in purchasing the rights to your script with the intention of producing it as a feature film. I believe that your work has immense potential and aligns perfectly with the vision I have for an upcoming project.

Before we proceed further, I would like to discuss the terms of the potential purchase, including the financial arrangements, credits, and any creative input you may wish to have during the production process. It's important to me that we establish a fair and mutually beneficial agreement that respects your creative contributions to the project.

Furthermore, we are committed to ensuring that you are appropriately credited for your creative contributions to the project and that your vision for the screenplay is respected during the production process. Our goal is to collaborate with talented writers like you to bring exceptional stories to the screen.

If this opportunity interests you, we would be delighted to schedule a meeting or a call to discuss the specifics of the potential purchase, including the terms, financial arrangements, and any creative involvement you may desire.

Please let us know your availability, and we will coordinate a time for our discussion.

Thank you for considering this inquiry. We are excited about the possibility of working with you to bring your screenplay to life on the big screen and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Lorraine Excellent, Joe. Warning people about scams which appear to be more professional or official these days is a great thing. I want to say thank you. I have not written a book (Congrats there!) and doubt I ever will, but the scams appear in so many ways. One cannot be too careful! 😎

Thanks, Lorraine. Evidently there must be a lot of people falling for these scams (and not being punished) or they won't be doing it.
Every time a circus or fair comes into town there are reports from the sheriff's office of folks getting ripped off by scams concerning house repairs and construction work.

message 3: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine I am not surprised, but definitely disheartened. A long time ago, over 25 years, I received a letter from Africa asking me to ‘open’ my checking account if I wanted to help some people in really bad circumstances. Luckily, I thought that the person who wrote m the letter must be ‘crackers’ if he thought that I would give him access to my checking account. I threw it in the ‘circular file’. I do remember being amazed & dumbfounded that someone would write a letter such as that to anyone.😳

Sonia Thank you so much for posting this blog. Yesterday, I received the exact same email message about my book. My husband found your blogpost and let me know not to respond so I appreciate your warning. Thank you so much for taking the time to let others know what to be on the lookout for.

Jan I recently received the same letter. I'm a self-published author and seem to be on a spam list for I constantly receive these types of letters. One recently used the name of an actual literary agent in NY and claimed he had a letter from a well-known publisher claiming to want to purchase rights to my first book. When I spoke to him he had a foreign accent (very common with these scams). He claimed to be from New Jersey. I refused to work with him because he was obviously lying. I wanted to inform the real person that he was being impersonated by a foreign person.

You are welcome, Kiran. It seems that with technology you take two steps forward and one step backwards.

Sometime ago I posted a review for a book titles COMPUTER CAPERS. You wouldn't believe some of the crimes that were committed. Some were unpunished because there weren't any laws concerning computer crime.

Dan Lutts Good advise, Joe. I almost got scammed some years ago by a guy who said his company wanted to publish my book. But when the scammer said I had to provide some money, I said, "Hey, it doesn't work that way. I don't pay you, you pay me.

message 13: by Tekeyla Friday (new)

Tekeyla Friday Hello Joe,

I am deeply grateful you posted this. I suspect this email I got to be another scam from Balboa Press - division of Hayhouse! I knew a lot about self-publishing houses and their scams but I never suspected that a respectable house like Hay House publishing would allow for such nonsense yet I published through Balboa in 2014 and they sold my information to all types of scammers including those who pretend to want to be your agent, make movies, republish for higher royalties etc.

The worst part is while working with Balboa, I had given them my work number and I am still being called at my old work place. I have informed my past coworkers that those were scams and to please not share any information with them.

Please find below a similar email signed by Jon Casey…too bad the real Jon Casey cannot build a case for identity theft.

Dear Tekeyla,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to let you know how much I love your book. It's got this awesome vibe, and I'm really interested in turning it into a movie.

Before we get into the details, I'd love to chat about how we can make this happen. We can talk about money stuff, how you want to be credited, and if you want to share your creative ideas during the movie-making process. I want to make sure we work together in a way that's fair and cool for both of us.

Your creative input will definitely get the credit it deserves, and I'm all about keeping your vision for the script alive throughout the whole process. I love working with talented writers like you to bring great stories to the big screen.

If you're up for it, let's schedule a meeting or a call whenever you're free. We can talk about the script, figure out the details, and see where this takes us.

My team will be reaching out to you soon to give you more details and answer any questions you might have. They're a great bunch, and I'm sure you'll enjoy working with them.

Thanks a lot for considering this, and I'm really excited about the chance to work with you and bring your script to life on the big screen!

Best,

I receive these all the time. Today I got my first one from "Jon Casey." I never respond, ever. My agent would laugh his booty off if I forwarded any of these letters to him.

Always check with the online site Writer Beware before accepting any movie/television offers!!

KatClarkAuthor Thank you so much for posting this. I just received an email from the supposed Jon Casey about turning my book into a movie. I was instantly skeptical because since my book was published in 2020 I've received probably over 50 calls and emails like this, all scams of course. When I googled him I found this right away. It's such a shame that people take advantage of author's dreams like that. I really appreciate the information you've shared.

Skot Jonz Thank you, Joe - and please do leave this up for other authors. I so appreciate you sharing your experience. Many blessings to you!

A recent email from Jon Casey was too good to be true so I did my due diligence and stumbled upon your post. Otherwise, I might have been tempted to reply.

With a recent post to my blog, I did a test ad campaign on WordPress and Tumbler. After an 11-day run, stats showed a world map with 500 visitors from 33 countries. Mostly USA, India, and Jamaica which was expected because the subject matter is Master Numbers and the 2024 US Presidential Election and tags Kamala Harris. However, I was suspicious why anyone from China, Nigeria, Ghana, Russia, Georgia, Philippines, etc would be interested. Then these offers of book-to-film started rolling in claiming they read my book and were so excited! It seemed reasonable that a talent agency / producer may have read my blog, and the adrenaline rush from the uptick in traffic made me susceptible. I could have easily fell for it, but I'm not promoting a 20-year-old book and I doubt they even read it.

If it helps you and other authors, I have also received similar offers from:
>Joan Gomez AB Brokers in Oxnard CA brokersab.com
>Natalie Jenkins United Talent Agency in Beverly Hills CA with a gmail address
>Athena Blair Brilliant Books Literary Thomasville NC

All the best to you and the other authors in the goodreads community for your comments to Joe's post.

If anyone is interested, the title of my blog is POTUS CODE: Election-Year Guide to Picking a President by the Numbers
on WordPress and my website

I am not selling any service or product. You will have no luck finding me on social media seeking attention and followers.

From a numerology perspective, I examine the candidates, nominees, wannabees, and also-rans in this election as well as the 2020 election.

I consider it incumbent on me to share this information freely. In doing so, I steadfastly maintain objectivity and neutrality, neither endorsing nor condemning any political party or candidate.

Liane De Witt I'm so relieved to find an exact copy of the e-mail I received in this blog comment section. I am also a self published author, and I've been inundated with e-mails from people telling me how wonderful my book is - all of them want money. I started feeling discouraged - a book I wrote to help people turning into nothing but a bad taste in my mouth. The thought never crossed my mind that an mailing list could have been sold with self-published authors' information. (I know that about some other industries.) Now that I understand it better, I can lift my head and start feeling positive about my book again.
