When Carter Dawson is arrested for a crime that he did not commit, saddled with the ritualistic murders of the DHK, Captain Steven L. Quimby of the Boston Police Department is more than willing to overlook certain known facts and even plant or alter evidence if necessary to make certain that this awful case is finally put to rest for the collective good of the city. After harsh treatment and some bumps and bruises, Carter finds himself trapped in an interrogation room with a suffering police officer who wants nothing less than a full confession out of Carter and will stop at nothing to acquire it. As the forces at work against him are revealed in all of their ugliness, the supernatural world, led by Caleb goes to war to keep Carter Dawson on this side of the afterlife in order to help him fulfill his destiny.
After decoding the final DHK filter, Jack “Bear” Branton has gathered all of the unwitting victims into a secured safe house with the exception of his sister, Rebekah Branton. Although she was singled out on the last cipher, she refuses to leave Carter Dawson’s bed side. When back to back snow storms pound the city and things begin to fall apart in the physical world and the spiritual world, Bear grapples with the voices in his head and the truth in his heart. Though a series of earthy messengers, he finally accepts that in order to destroy the DHK once and for all, he will have to go against his own word and do the unthinkable. For his sister, Mary Branton’s death, Bear had made a blood oath up into the heavens. Now, twenty-plus years later, if he does not break his sworn resistance; his defiance will cost his sister, Rebekah Branton her life.
As the forces of evil mount for a final campaign; Carter Dawson and Jack “Bear” Branton are forced into the mix together with a shared goal, that both will give their very lives to see to the end. When they compare notes, both men realize that they must trust each other and master their new abilities if they have any hope of repelling a vicious plot levied against them and the host of angels sent to protect them.
