Word of the Week #399:

Desideratum

Have we spoke about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs before?

Well, I was thinking about it, earlier today.

I am inclined to believe that a number of my peers—mostly in the same age, geography, and socioeconomic stratum—find themselves pursuing needs that lie on very distinct levels in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Of course, that is not the most surprising part. The surprising part is that they also tend to exhibit an inclination to disregard their needs in other levels of hierarchy.

That sounds odd, right?

We have all seen artists ruin their health in pursuit of their artistic endeavours. Or people risk their well-being for maintaining the belonging they feel in their abusive relationships. Or freedom fighters put their lives on the line.

It’s odd, but it seems as if we are all built to seek what we didn’t have, even if it requires us to discard what we already have.

We seem to have some weird ways to keep moving forward.
