I like puzzles which is why I was drawn to the unsolved murder of Frances Coles back in 1891. Did Jack the Ripper return, after three years travelling the world, to take up lodgings again in Whitechapel to kill her? Or was it someone else? I know a lot of people favour the JTR theory or the notion he never left and just kept on killing but I wasn't so sure. In my latest book, 'The return of the Ripper? The murder of Frances Coles' I explored that very idea. What surprised me was just how similar her murder was to say, Elizabeth Stride, one of the so called canonical 5. But in Frances's case there was a suspect and a pretty good one at that, which kind of added a whole layer of suspicion I had not been aware of when I began. So it made for a really interesting research operation which hopefully adds to the mystery. It also took me into the dark realms of Ripper territory of which, when I began, I knew very little. Safe to say I know a lot more now.
