Wrriting

Greetings. I thought I might present some of my philosophies of writing. I don’t consider myself an expert on the subject, after all I only write for fun and only published my book because I thought other people might enjoy it. I have several other books that I’ve written, but haven’t published because I’m absolutely lousy at advertising them. I probably should put in a warning that there may be spoilers in this.

So the first thing that I think about writing, it’s that writing should be something that you enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it is not worth doing. You should also write books that you like. I try to write books that I would want to read. I enjoy creating stories and although I read everything from sci-fi and fantasy to history. I tend to write simple fantasy and sci-fi. Since Trapped in a Curse was the first book I wrote, it’s a very straightforward and easy story. Talida, the main character, tends to solve problems by hitting them and if that doesn’t work, she hits the harder and more often. If she encounters a problem that she can’t solve by hitting it, she doesn’t really know what to do. It takes her time to figure out what she needs to do to solve the problem. Her cursed armour is a problem she can’t solve by simply hitting. It made Talida a very simple character. She’s not my favorite character.

The second thing I like is a complete story. I find it annoying when I read a book ended this the start of the story. In fact nowadays when I encounter a story this just starting in the first book, with nothing completed all, I tend not to bother with anymore books in the series. So I always try and write a complete story. This doesn’t mean that the story ends, but that’s a story in the book is complete. Trapped in a Curse is actually a good example of what I mean. At the end of the book Talida is free of the curse, but the curse is clearly not broken. She can just get out of your armour, but since the armour still turns invisible, the most notable part of the curse, it must still be cursed. Kelton is still out there as well and they both get defeated in the third book. At present I’m thinking that the armour will be destroyed.

I also like the third person, so my books are written in the third person. It isn’t that I haven’t read any good books written in the first or second person, I just like the third person better. I find that I’m usually more engaged in the story when it’s in the third person, possibly because I have a tendency to create my own story as I’m reading. Most of my favorite authors do write in the third person. My favorite authors are Anne McCaffrey, Timothy Zahn, and Lawrence Watt-Evans. Actually there’s a lot of other authors that I like is well, but the list would be rather long if I listed all of them. That’s just my top three authors.

That’s just a few of my thoughts on writing. If you’d like to read some samples of my writing, I provide some samples (they’re completely unedited) in the blog on my website. I also have a page there (Meadow and Lark) where you can read a few unedited chapters of an unpublished book called Stretching Their Wings.
