A Blog Post
My first!
It was a little hard for me to decide what I wanted my debut blog post to be about. But what better topic than...writing? More specifically, some thoughts about my recent releases.
The arrival of March marked the first month since the release of my latest novel, BOX (all caps for dramatic effect). It was my first foray into writing a proper crime thriller.
Which in many ways, made it all the more horrifying to create at times. The thing about my previous (dark, very dark) novel, Skinwalker, is that it was a horror in the strictest sense of the word. Pure dread, is how I'd imagine being put in the situation that those characters had to deal with. However, at the end of the day, what they were facing was, without giving too much away, too fantastical to exist in reality. Or at the very least, we have no tangible proof that such things exist (right?).
In the case of BOX, the horrors are very real. Serial killers, sinister people, they do exist. That's a very true kind of terror.
Yet is that to say that Skinwalker was not rooted in some tangible horror itself? I suppose that isn't true, when you consider what each individual character has had to deal with on a personal level.
Sometimes it's not the monster that's the hardest to face. It's your own pain and torment from the past.
Which is heavy stuff! I know, and no wonder my next novel is going to be a little on the lighter side. Well, as light as sci-fi can be. I've just gotta find a way to handle all the jargon.
