Why I Write

I wrote the first volume of ๐‘†๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘Žโ€™๐‘  ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘š because I was tired of the misrepresentation and dumbing down of real history in magical realism. Realism should be real โ€“ or at least as true as possible. Celtic culture has been misused and distorted for so long that I wanted to fight back and tell a story that dipped into the exciting truth. I fought against insulting my readers by obscuring the origins of magical culture by repeating common, lazy misinformation, and I fought to reveal what could be the reality behind myths. My reviewers so far, have obviously found this an exciting new approach. Iโ€™ve been very pleased to be told that what I have written is not a โ€œre-hashโ€. Iโ€™m proud that Iโ€™ve written a fresh addition to the genre that uses my years of research and teaching, rather than just repeating tired fantasy tropes. As I wrote, I could not stomach lying about real peoplesโ€™ culture, and even though the marketplace probably finds my approach overcomplicated and unnecessary, I have no regrets.

It is no surprise then that, even after only a bit of praise, Iโ€™ve been encouraged to continue to write the wrongs of misrepresentation โ€“ this time in the sphere of education. In the last year of my career as a teacher, I was trained or โ€œprofessionally developedโ€ by a new theorist who stated that the lockdowns of COVID proved that teachers only impede learning, and that it was better to dispense with real-time learning altogether and let the kids teach themselves. Yes, that actually was my last professional development training. So, I decided that my evil sorcerer would plan to enlist this new philosophy to transform the education of her students while also sacrificing them to AI control to make them even more lost. I wonโ€™t bore you with my assessment of the modern state of education, but I will say that I am very glad to have left the profession before Chat GPTโ€™s effect upon learning (or non-learning). It was a close call.

I hope that readers will benefit from my therapy of journaling about my actual experiences in teaching. It has been a wild ride so far, and Iโ€™m amazed by the breadth of what Iโ€™ve experienced in my three decades of teaching โ€“ from the sublime to the now ridiculous.

Thatโ€™s my rant for today.

Iโ€™ll leave you with the first chapter of ๐‘†๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘Žโ€™๐‘  ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘š: ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ด๐ผ ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘ฃ๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘ข๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›. My young protagonists and their two trusted teachers (and associated immortals) have to battle these two characters. They are in a very bad way at the moment, so I need to keep writing in order to help them.

Take care, and be critical about what you read โ€“ it is much more fun and meaningful that way!
