The story will hook you from the first page itself. Author has well researched all the historical and folklore aspects along with the occult parts not only of India but of Persia (Iran) too. Pace was perfect throughout the book. Not a dull moment. Author has expertly created suspense and mystery until the last line. It is a must read for fans of vampire and horror genres. It’s worth a read.”

VAMPIRES!! When I say this word what comes to your mind. A heavenly beautiful white skinned foreigner, who possess awesome magic and does actions out of this world. Now when I tell you, there’s a book of Indian vampire and it portrays them how they really should be. Intrigued? Let’s dig in then.

Set in early 1800s in British India, something is attacking villagers mercilessly, draining last drop of their blood and hanging their naked dead body upside down. Erlene, an anthropologist and British Capt. Jonathan Smith investigates the matter with their team. Soon they discover they are up against a supernatural entity named “Chedipe” whose staple is human blood. How are they going to stop a supernatural being with mere bullets? Will any of them survive this ruthless creature?

I have never read any book for vampires in India. So when I saw this, I knew I have to read it. What I like most about this book is the realistic portrayal of vampires. Here Chedipe is an ugly creature who displays her supernatural abilities in a practical way. Her fights with the enemies are shown in the way it should be, not the way Hollywood shows it.

Both main female characters protagonist and antagonist have their back stories in detail. Chedipe’s life long struggle, torture and finally her turning to darkness is amazingly written. Both of them are headstrong and confident. While Erlene is compassionate, Chedipe is a maniac killer. Other characters too, are brilliantly portrayed.

There will be some explicit blood gore and other scenes but that is expected in this genre. At the end, there was hint of a sequel. I would love to read that. Also, there is a bonus of short story too. It was cherry on the cake. I like Erlene’s character very much and wants to read more of her adventures in India.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Read with impactful narration

“What sets this story apart is the author’s remarkable ability to breathe life into a narrative deeply rooted in India’s folklore. It’s a refreshing departure from conventional horror tales, providing a glimpse into the supernatural through a distinct cultural lens.”

Set against the backdrop of the 19th century, a time when the mysteries of Tantric Vidya still held sway, this narrative delves deep into India’s rich folklore. It takes us to the villages where belief in beings beyond the realms of humans and animals was not only prevalent but profoundly rooted.

As readers, we’re accustomed to male vampire protagonists, but Chedipe shatters this stereotype. She’s a character who is as beguiling as she is fearsome, luring victims with her beauty only to reveal her ghastly, deadly nature. Her allure is more than just skin-deep; it’s a malevolent power that transcends human understanding, weaving a narrative of terror and fascination.

The tale brings together a diverse trio of characters, each with their unique backgrounds and motivations. An astute English captain, an Anglo-Iranian anthropologist, and a resolute Indian subedar unite to confront this supernatural enigma. Their journey is fraught with danger as they attempt the seemingly impossible – to defeat a being who has conquered death itself.

It’s important to note that “Chedipe” delves into mature themes, including 18+ content and sexual elements. But beneath these cautionary aspects lies a narrative that provides a unique and heart-pounding experience.

Author masterfully intertwines a plot that immerses readers in an India of days gone by, where ancient legends and myths coalesce with the era of the Company Raj.

“Chedipe” is a horror novel by Vikkram Dewan set in the 1800s, revolving around an Indian vampire. It offers an interesting take on Indian folklore, which was new to me and sparked my curiosity. The storyline largely lived up to my expectations, providing a thrilling experience.

One of the highlights of the book is the portrayal of Chedipe herself. She is depicted brilliantly as a fierce and malevolent creature. However, I personally desired more intensity, gore, and overall presence of Chedipe. Nevertheless, for readers who prefer a less explicit approach, the book may strike a balance.

While the writing style could have been more captivating, lacking the engaging narration typically found in books of this genre, there were moments where the author successfully set the scene for the time period. This aspect was one of the book’s strengths in terms of writing.

In conclusion, “Chedipe” is a good book with a few flaws. It may not be a masterpiece, but it is worth reading, especially for fans of the horror genre or vampire stories in general.
