Pissed
I just got an email from Shelfari reporting that new settings (ie locations in the book) have been added to the detail page on the site for my novel "Thomas Jefferson, Rachel & Me."
The email refers to them as "member" edits. The site reports they were added by "Shelfari."
What? Which is it? Do you, Shelfari, who/which sent the email, mean that "Shelfari" sits down and reads every friggin' book on the site and adds locations to their detail pages? After months of these books sitting on the site?
If so, obviously it is done by a digital algorithm and means absolutely nothing, zero, in terms of reader interest or involvement or in terms of anything at all.
But hey, thanks, Shelfari, whoever/whatever you are, for the utter BS of the delusion — always a part of the national experience but these days made deeply personal and insidious, endemic across the culture, by the marketing maniacs.
Ugh. Our kids are goners. If so, where is the USA headed?
Ahem. Oh. Excuse me. I'm fine now. Everything is fine, thank you. THANKS, Shelfari, for adding "Paris" and "Clarement" as settings in the book because they are place names your robotic creepers and crawlers stupidly picked up by scanning the text in .0000578 seconds.

Inside Out: a not-so-smalltown editor's life
Bits and pieces from my newspaper column as well as some riffs on the horrors of novel writing and trying to get one's work the attention it deserves.
