“Why do I get the feeling you weren’t telling the whole truth about how prepared you are to finish up strong for Western Days?” Wes said as he stopped next to Matt.
“Yeah, you were definitely tap dancing up there.” Clay crossed his arms over his chest.
Grant clapped him on the shoulder. “Mama’s baby boy better check the trusty binder.”
“I don’t guess any of you would like to help?” Matt asked as he turned in the circle his brothers had formed.
Travis sighed. “Sure we would, but you’re going to have to explain to Mom why you need help.”
“So not happening.” Matt nodded. “That’s what you’re telling me.”
They were grinning when Sarah and Jordan joined them. Wes wrapped his arms around Sarah to give her a sweet kiss. Clay braced himself for impact as Jordan tossed herself into his arms. That left Brooke hanging back, so Walt and Prue ushered her into the family group as they also joined.
“Matt, you could use some help, couldn’t you?” his mother asked as she raised her eyebrows to explain to him that he better say yes. Matt wondered if Brooke understood that his mother had started encouraging her participation in Western Days. It started with a firm but not painful hold on Brooke’s hand that made it impossible to fade back into the safe crowd.
Matt could use help, and the idea of working with Brooke was somehow much more appealing than working with any of his brothers. “Of course, there’s still so much to do.” Matt met Brooke’s stare as he turned up the wattage on his best smile. It never failed to catch a woman’s attention. From there, he usually introduced himself, asked for a phone number or, in this case, negotiated some urgently needed help with Western Days. Then he would accept Brooke’s reluctant offer to help and charm her into forgetting it hadn’t been her own idea in the first place.
But Brooke nodded politely before tugging her hand free. “It sounds like you have some things to discuss. I believe I’ll head over to the potluck table to see what we have for dinner.” Matt pasted a pleasant expression over his shock as he and his family watched Brooke navigate the potluck table. She appeared unaffected by the ripple of disbelief she’d left in her wake.
