Not receiving notifications

Perhaps you have noticed the phrase "Not receiving notifications" behind some individuals names. Well, here is the reason. We are no longer receiving Goodreads notifications being sent to our, in my case, Gmail account. I still get notifications such as a book being offered in a giveaway and updates of reviews from friends, but I no longer hear of people liking one of my reviews or responses to comments. I tried contacting the GRs help desk but all they did was refer me to comments made by others complaining about the same problem.

Now in all honesty I can see the notifications on my GRs page but it is a hassle. I mean you look at the first one on the list and then you have to scroll down to the next. And after seeing that one and checking it out, you have to go back to the beginning and scroll down again. What if you have a couple of hundred that you need to scroll down past? My finger gets tired from rolling that wheel to scroll down. If the notifications are sent to my Gmail account I can simply delete them after reading them.

So, no, my problem is not fixed. And I am mad! And believe it or not I got so fed up that I stayed off of GRs for about week. I even thought of quitting GRs altogether, or maybe starting over under a new name. If anybody from Goodreads sees this, please fix my problem, and then fix it for my friends as well.

Federico DN Have you tried the All Notifications Manager Joe? You can just right-click and open a new window or tab for each new Notification. Maybe it's also a hassle idk, but that's the way I've been doing ever since I joined GR so maybe that's why I don't mind. I've never used Emails Notifications just receiving more than a few mails a day I feel I'm being spammed lol. All the best!

Thanks, Federico. I will try it and see what happens.

Tracey Hi Joe, I received the following response in October after I contacted Goodreads Support:
We’ve simplified the way we notify members about activity on Goodreads. As part of this change, we’ve moved the notification settings to a new Notifications page and updated or removed some of our settings. For example, you’re now only notified on Goodreads about social activity, such as likes, mentions, and follows, and these notifications are no longer sent via email.

To make sure you don’t miss any Goodreads activity, we recommend reviewing your notification settings. For steps to locate the new Notifications page and our updated settings, check out our Help topic: How can I edit my notification settings?

If you have any additional concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know. I can also recommend visiting Goodreads Help for answers to many other commonly asked questions.

Joe Krakovsky Thanks, Tracy. I had trouble finding my notification settings. I tried what you said and I will let you know what happens. Thanks, Tracey.

Debbie W. Great blog, Joe! Since not receiving emails about Notifications, I now click on the Notification icon (bell) and then click on "View all notifications" so that I can see the entire list. I still have to go back and forth and even open the number of likes in a review in order to see everyone who recently liked my review.
Now I'm having issues with a couple of other things:
- I cannot view people's 2025 reading challenges on my computer or on the app;
- I'm not getting notifications when people comment on my reviews, even though I've clicked on the box that indicates "Notify me when people comment" (I have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see if anyone left a comment in order to answer them).
I've contacted the Help department, but all I get are generic answers that don't focus on the problem at all.
Now, I'm not even getting my daily updates of friends' reviews via email for the last several days! I'm seriously wondering ... am I being punished for contacting Help on GR?

Debbie W. Good news! GR friend, Federico recommended logging off GR for a bit (e.g. a minute), then log back on! It worked! I'm receiving comment notifications and my daily update again!
As for not seeing Reading Challenges, seems like everyone is in the same predicament. Since GR restructured the Reading Challenge, I'm hoping this is just a glitch that will get rectified. If not, I want the old Reading Challenge structure back!

Joe Krakovsky Thank you everybody for commenting. To this I might add, why do computer people think they can always build a better mouse trap? Some like updates and change but for me, If it isn't broke, don't fix it.
